NIVERSITY of Houston, founded in 1927, is a public institution.  Programs are offered through the Colleges of Architecture, Business Administration, Education, Humanities and Fine Arts, Natural Science and Mathematics, Optometry, Pharmacy, Social Sciences, and Technology; the Graduate School of Social Work; the Cullen College of Engineering; the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management; and the Bates College of Law. Its 550-acre campus is located in a residential area, three miles from downtown Houston.

The University of Houston is a national urban research university.  In addition to providing full and part-time academic programs for 34,334 students, UH is also a nationally recognized doctoral degree granting, comprehensive research university.  Research initiatives match the strengths and needs of the nation's fourth largest city, such as health, energy, environment, business, law, and education; and UH sponsors more than 300 partnerships with city and state entities.  UH, the nation's most diverse research university, is also home to the country's first educational television station. Its fine arts programs serve as the base for the city's extensive cultural community.
