 | Quite Bright | UH offered an outstanding honors program and a large school/city experience. Although I was relatively immature in my social and academic approach to college, UH's honors program faculty personnel (esp. Dr. Estes) and the commitment of some of the student development staff (esp. Dr. Douglass, Mr. Bridges and Ms. Anzivino-Stephens) supported my transition to becoming a successful individual. I was not very pleased with the administrative nature of being a number in a crowd and having to deal with staff who had been abused by long lines of tired and rude students before me and were therefore not very approachable by the time my turn came, but I enjoyed the heck out of being one of the relatively few students living on campus who benefitted from the plethora of student development funds contributed by the commuter students who did not partake of the programming opportunities. | Starting Job: Residential Director, Preparedness: B, Reputation: D+ | | |

| | Quite Bright | | Attempting to make a blanket statement about the quality of any university is generally ill-advised: I can only say that UH has been a great experience for _me_ academically and socially, and that if you are looking for the sort of things I was looking for, you will be quite happy. All of the departments I've had prolonged exposure to have been excellent. For a liberal arts student wanting to enter grad school, the Honors College, with its brilliant professors and plethora of opportunities, is a dream. We have wonderful English professors and a distinguished Philosophy department. As with ALL schools, the difficulty level of the coursework is entirely dependent upon the professors. No matter where you are, do your research on whoever you take. Some professors are easy and inspiring, some easy and uninspiring, some difficult and inspiring, some difficult and uninspiring; some you'll just take to get through a course and others will change your life. I can certainly say that I've become a more thoughtful person from my experiences here, for my part. I've heard great things from friends in the sciences department as well. I don't care so much about school spirit or a campus community, and I didn't get it. Regardless, through the Honors College especially, I was able to make quite a few thoughtful, intelligent friends. The dorms are problematic - food, old housing, etc - but social life is never a problem. As a white person, it's pretty enlightening to be the minority here sometimes; I'm the only white in my work environment. Houston - for those with a car - is full of art, shows, restaurants, social opportunities. And naturally, this university is CHEAP - cheaper than basically anywhere else. This place has advantages and disadvantages: figure out what you're searching for and see if UH will provide you with what you need. I can only vouch for myself, but I'm very glad I came. | Faculty Accessibility: A+, Extracurricular Activities: B- | | | |
