I transfered to UIW after a few rocky years elsewhere, and it was the best thing I could have possibly done. I only wish I had gone there for my entire undergraduate degree! When I transfered I lost a few hours - some of the classes I had taken were under a different name and it was a struggle to get UIW to accept them, but they DID eventually take all of my high-grade hours.

The majority of the professors are friendly, helpful, intelligent, and personable. I've only had a couple professors I didn't like, and it was primarily because they were disorganized.

The food has a bad rap here, but it must have improved a lot because I don't have any problems with it at all. I live off-campus so I don't have any experience with the meal plans, but there's always a good selection of relatively healthy food, and there are 3 little cafes as well as the main cafeteria, so you don't have to trek across the entire campus to get your food.

When I first started at UIW the parking was TERRIBLE, but they have just opened up a brand-new parking garage which ALWAYS has empty spaces, and there are multiple shuttles running up and down the hill all day so you don't have to walk miles, and the wait is never long. Just make sure you give yourself about 20 minutes before class starts so you can walk from the drop-off point to the classrooms.

Although There are some good things about the Univeristy of the Incarnate Word, such as the professors and accesability to them and the academic prgrams, there are, unfortuantly, many things that the University lacks as a college.

For example, they tend to let things fall through as far as extracurricular activites go. When I atteneded there I tried ti join 6 clubs, all of which never met or when e-mailed or called, the organization leaders never got back to me. I think this is an unfortunate flaw because this does not allow:
1) The student body to meet eachother and therefore develop relationships
2) fails to enhance the academic experince
3) fails to deter soe of the most common reasons why students leave a college: because they are not being kept busy enough to forget about homesickness.

Another things that SEVERLY lacks is the mean plan. When I started at the university I put myself on a meal plan only for it to be changed during the summer. The news mean plans costs about $3,000 a semester which covers 15 all you can eat meals. This however comes with it;s hang ups. If you don't use the 15 meals over the duration of the week, they meals you did not use don't roll over you just lose them. Also if you use up the 15 meals before the end of the week, you can not use any fromt he next week. You just pay cash.

Which brings me to the crappy food. I once went down to the cafateria to get some turkey only to find that it was not even cooked all the way and when the cook noticed this, she switched the turkey out....but used the same tongs she used to serve the raw turkey to serve the cooked turkey. I have also, on a few occasions, found roaches in the salad bar. Not the mention that the food is awful as it is. I once bought a friend who came to visit me the food and out of a meal of Grilled cheese (only half melted), green beans, and pasta. He could only stand to eat the griled cheese because the green beans "tasted like plastic" and the pasta "was cooked to mush." And since most of the food places on campus are provided with things made from the cafateria, there isn't ANY good food anywhere. And you have to buy a meal plan if you live on campus.

The residents halls are also awful. For one, no room is the same size. some are way bigger and others smaller (even within the same hall) but the room price is the same. Also, the hall matience is awful. When I arrived at the university, my bed was broken and I could not sit on the end otherwise the matress would fall through the frame. I put in a work order move in day and no one came to fix until 3 weeks later. Also, on really cold nights, my roommate and I would have to bundle under 4 or 5 blankets because the school would not turn on the heaters in our hall. It was only turned onw hen my roomates father finally called and complained. We told our RA about this before hand, but she never got back to us. Also, on move in day my roommate and I decided we wanted to make bunk beds but to do this we needed metal pegs which our RA said she would find for us but never did. My dad ended up having to make the pegs for us but then no one ever came to put the beds up. Another thing about the residents halls is the lack of washing machines. In our hall, as in many others, there was one washer and dryer per floor (each floor holding about 24 people. Most of the time I had to go to a laundry mat to get mylaundry done.

Another thing lacking at UIW is their attendance policy. Although some teacher do not doe this, they are allowed to take points off your final grade for attendance. It is even school policy that if a certain percentage of classes are missed, the teacher may ask you to drop the class. BUT they themselves will not drop you from the class (like most colleges would) so if you don't go and drop it yourself, they will give you a failing grade as a final grade. It's another way they leach money from you. Not to mention they have a lot of bogus classes that you must take such as dimensions of wellness. That class was a waste of my time and I learned absolutly nothing.

And like any other school they try to take money from you whereever they can. When I withdrew from the university they had to go through my room and asses damages. At the beginning of the fall semester they give you a sheet and you have to go through the room and write down things that are already wrong with the room. I did that but was still fined for things in the room that were already broken and accounted for on the sheet already. They also try and get money from you when it comes back to selling books. I paid $300 for my books at the beginning of fall smester and sold them back before the spring semester and only received $95 for the book none of which were damaged.

And finally the last thing wrong with UIW (although I am sure there is more) is the lack of knowledge among staff about the rules and regulations. Their website is severly out of date, and if you asked 5 administrators the same question about a policy, you would get 5 different answers. For example, when I wanted to join a sorotiy, I was told you could not join one ulness you completed 12 hours at UIW (dual credit did not count) however when I filled out the application, they still let me rush despite the fact that all my hours were dual credit hours. Also even though in the rule book it states that you can not join a soroity until your second semester, I was allowed to rush in my first semester and no one knew if that was okay or not.

I believe the university's main problem is that they are trying to grow their student body without the proper facilities or organization that it takes. Unless you enjoy chaos and are only looking to get an education and leave, UIW is not for you.

The only outstanding thing about Incarnate Word is its faculty.
They are extremely accessible and I have never met anyone who was arrogant or not helpful. Even professors I don't have for class are awesome to talk to. They are respectable, hard-working people. One of our professors is a former US Ambassador.
If you come here and are involved with your professors, those are pretty much the only worthy people with whom you will network…any maybe some international students. UIW is replete with students who just care about getting “the paper,” are here only because of Daddy, or don’t care about their education at all. You may care. You may just want to learn and grow as a person. Don't expect many like-minded individuals, but if you find some, hold on to them. Students who are here for the right reasons are rare.
The horrible administration undermines just about everything about the school that you may think has potential. Yes, our pharmacy school has a high retention rate and we have a good nursing program, but what about our liberal arts programs? Incarnate Word is opening an Arizona campus (we have one in China and one in Mexico) and getting an optometry school, yet we only have two professors solely dedicated to political science courses.
A year at Incarnate Word is roughly $30,000 if you live on campus.
It's not too much to ask to have washing machines for the first month-and-a-half in the new (most expensive) dorms, is it?
Apparently it is. We had a washer and a dryer per floor after that month-and-a-half until we got back from Thanksgiving Break and FINALLY got the ones we were supposed to have originally.
and got our original ones. Clean couches at the poor excuse for a student center would be nice. No mold embedded in the walls of a residence hall
is expected. More than one professor for the International Studies major would be awesome.
But we do not have that. Our president prefers that the university give out scholarships to many undeserving athletes instead of putting some of that money toward remodeling some old buildings. Many international students get free rides. Why? Well, theyre international, that’s why. The school has the wrong idea when it comes to diversifying the campus. We could have many out-of-state people, or better students, as in previous years, instead our president just wants the school to grow in enrollment. He claims to want to keep the demographics like those of South Texas. (Mexican-American and low-income) You will also find it strange that such a small campus educates 6700 students.

Also, expect them to screw you over in any way possible when it comes to money.
Your meal plan money does not transfer over to the next semester. Don’t get a meal plan, add in cash to your student card. That DOES transfer. Also, you have to fill out paperwork if your loan spills over. Otherwise, they will put some in your bookstore card and keep the rest. Staying in the dorm during Christmas Break costs you $100 per week. Forget to check out and they’ll charge you the full $400, or if they see you around a bit after the deadline.
There are several places to eat on campus. That’s good. Another good thing is the tutoring program.
No one outside of San Antonio seems to know the university. I am from Texas, so I assumed that people would’ve at least HEARD of Incarnate Word when I told them I was going there. Wrong.

UIW is NOT for you if you are:
-not a nursing major
-a liberal arts major
-someone who wants to meet motivated, bright individuals
-someone who wants the appropriate service for the money they spend
-are classy, and selective when it comes to friends (youll have a hard time)
UIW IS for you if you:
-got rejected everywhere else
-got a score of 16-22 on your ACT
-failed a bunch of classes in high school
-didn’t know the university would be so flawed but are stuck here
-want to leave home
This place is not worth your money. You are much better off at Trinity or even St. Mary's, regardless of its bad location. Hell, you’re better off at your state school at home, where they actually have enough professors to teach the classes the school offers. You will be miserable here unless you value being able to have close relationships with your professors. (Which you can do at a larger school, you just need to be more proactive)

Super Brilliant
Incarnate Word's largest assett is most certainly the faculty. The professors are certainly not there for the prestige. They are they because they truly enjoy and want to teach. They want you to do well, and to succeed. Most of the professors will go above and beyond to help you because they are so dedicated. They are all extremely knowledgeable and scholarly, and they want to share that with you. If you want to learn more about something from class, or want to know about something they specialize in they are delighted to teach you. They are even happy to see you if you just stop by their office to say hi. As long as you wish to learn, they will do everything they can to teach you. Sometimes its easy to be lazy and do the bare minimum, but with many of the profs learning becomes so much fun and so interesting that you actually enjoy going to class. Like Dr. Greenberg in Comm Arts is so awesome you don't want class to end.

The administration on the other hand seems pretty clueless. So sometimes you have to cut through a lot of red tape.

The students are all very nice and friendly...easy to get along with.

The worst thing I can think to say about the school is that the parking situation is terribke.
