Student-teacher ratio in basic classes such as chemistry and calculus could be a problem when a student has not developed good studying methods. It forces the student to be more independent and learn on his/her own, which could be beneficial in the long run, and allows the student to develop valuable life-long skills. However, it will weed out those that are bright, but need more attention/ assistance to learn.

Not so bright
When I got accpeted into UT I was estatic. But that pipedream soon faded after reality set in. The only thing that pushes this school and its students forward is its football team, and I must admit, as a highschool student I was caught up in the fanatisicsm. The students do nothing other than go to the played out 6th street and mooch off of thier parents. I have never seen a collection of lazier people in my life. The academics at UT are decent, but could be better. From what I've seen, most students cant balance a social life and academics in a tandem, most of which falter due to the former.

As a minority, I felt exremely out of place! UT advertised itself as diverse, but that is far from the truth! Some teachers I have even come across are blatantly racist.

I have made friends at UT, but I consider them out of the norm. Again, most of the students here know nothing oustide of obsesive drinking and living off thier parents.

My girlfriend even has her complaints. She attends law school and dislikes it. The professors are mediocre and the students are truely cutthroat. Shes told me horrendous stories. One in particular that sticks out is when an assignment is given in class, some students leave early to the library to hide a required book, or even rip out required items neccesary for the assignment. All in the name of that Number 1 class rank.

If I had the oppurtunity to go back and choose another university I would.

Overall, I like being here.

Pros-
-Austin is a great city. Got everything - music, parks, hills, lakes, clubs, bars, malls, etc.
-There is a huge selection/variety of classes. Want to take Urdu? It's here.
-Lots of people to make friends with, parties, etc.
-It's a good school. Academically it is a very well rated college.
-Overall good environment. In general the people here are friendly and open.

Cons:
-Texas is HOT. The weather is annoying sometimes.
-Sometimes it's way too crowded. And there are a lot of 100+ people classes. Like most of them. So it's hard to get to know your prof, and most don't really care about your individual grades.
-Housing. Only like a few percentage gets into dorms and apartments near campus can be expensive.
-Parking - there is like almost NO PARKING on campus during the weekdays. So don't even think about driving to school. [Take the bus]

I'm really pleased with the UT-Austin. Huge school with plenty of resources. Always something to do, and plenty of organizations to get involved in. I mostly came for the school of engineering, which was a great choice. The Women in Engineering Program is the best. I highly recommend female prospective engineers to consider this school. Now, particularly on the Mechanical Engineering department. I find it very impressive, with a great faculty, only a few bad eggs in the bunch, and that's usually just because they're too busy with their own research to care about the worthless undergraduate student. Most of the faculty is great, helpful, and willing to take time to talk to you whenever. My programming professor toured me around his robotics lab last week just because I walked into his research office. It was really cool. The staff is great too. The advisors are really knowledgeable and always available to help if there are scheduling issues (which as an engineer there always will be).
