Not so bright
I went to UT because of the 'wonderful' Anthropology program. What a joke! My classes were ridiculously easy, my community college I previously attended was ten times more challenging! A lot of busy work and busy reading is assigned, lectures don't hold a lot of importance. Students were able to miss every class but test day and were still able to pass with flying colors.

I also really hoped to have the 'college experience' here. Unless you want to join Greek life, the social scene is awful. Being social at UT consists of heavy drinking, heavy drug use, and sex. The few students that didn't party tended to keep to themselves and didn't get out much. Everyone else just walked around like broken zombies. (Don't even get me started on the Mac users and their club.)

Austin itself is a pretty neat city. I liked being able to walk everywhere. However, being yelled at by belligerent homeless people got tiring fast. The city isn't nearly as diverse as advertised. I come from Houston which is an extremely diverse city, Austin is just filled with a bunch of white people. The student body can often come across as arrogant liberals, even the professors. A professor once told me I was judgmental for saying that it was wrong to have sex with children in spite of what religious doctrine dictates.

Overall, I made a horrible mistake by coming here. If you're coming here to party, join Greek life, and get by with easy classes this is the school for you. However, if you're going to UT for the academics and intelligent student body.. go elsewhere. I left after a mere semester, what an awful school.

Quite Bright
All around extremely poor customer service.

Poor selection of student body.

Staff and faculty play mind games, guilt trip, and become really rude and unhelpful when you make a complaint or comment about anything.

Atmosphere seems to be focused on money and doing anything to protect the university's image. The university experience was all about image and lacking in quality and substance.

If you are uneducated about OBM or business management then you might not notice how poor the customer service truly is.

Super Brilliant
It's not a public Ivy that some people try to make it out to be. The business school, engineering school, and geosciences school are all prestigious, but for other programs, UT is no better or worse than any other big, state, public university.

I never cared for the student body as a whole while I was here. Too many are too self-absorbed. I got lost on campus the first night I was here and nobody really cared enough to stop what they were doing and give me decent directions. There's just not a sense of camaraderie here. It doesn't matter if you go to UT as well, to a lot of the students here, you're just another total stranger and they're too busy. Too many bookworm types who can succeed academically but lack social skills.

I didn't care for the actual campus, either. It's so small that you feel like you're in a little enclave of Austin rather than a big university. The buildings are really cramped. It's too bad they didn't give the school more room when they built it.

There's some attractive, classy girls here but there's also some not-so-attractive who think they are more important than they really are. You just have to be picky. It does take effort to make friends here. Most of the time, you'll make far more acquaintances than friends. Austin's a fun town but the traffic is horrible in downtown Austin, mainly due to small lanes.

If you can put up with all this, more than likely you'll have a marketable degree (as long as the major's decent). But for me, I wanted more out of my college experience.

Super Brilliant
After one year here, I can honestly say that attending this school has been the worst decision I have ever made. The classes here are a joke--My AP classes were harder than some courses are taken here. I am not challenged, even in some of my upper division classes. Although there are some great professors, they are few and far between. Most are just researchers with no passion or understanding of how to teach. This university focuses on graduate studies and research. I agree with some of the previous comments about diversity--it just isn't here. As a white male, even I can see the racial fragmentation. Forget about having friends of a different skin color, most of the students cluster with their own races.
The housing situation is terrible. The on-campus residence halls are horribly expensive, and very dilapidated (except for the two upper-class dorms Duren and San Jacinto). The student body itself is strongly anti-intellectual. If you are someone interested in poetry, modern art, or postmodernism this is not the place for you. Also, if you are an introvert this university is your worst nightmare. In fact, you should probably escape Texas in general. I've found that most of the negative stereotypes about this state actually are true here at UT. I'm amazed at how overrated this school is simply because of the football team and athletics. As a liberal arts student, I feel like a third-class citizen; we get less scholarships, funding, teachers, etc. The business school is blatantly catered to, followed by the hard sciences. If you are looking for a well-rounded education this is not the place for you. Also, the honors programs within Liberal Arts are highly overrated. Most of the people in Plan II are pretentious and manipulative. The LAH students are somewhat better, but much more insecure. I see a lot of broken spirits here. If you're happy at UT, chances are it's because your family has money or you do a lot of drugs. Don't let the surrounding city fool you--there isn't that much to do in Austin if you don't like 6th street or alcohol.
If you have the chance to go somewhere else, do not attend this school. Don't let money stop you. Sure, the difference in tuition between here and a private school may seem like a lot, but that's before all the therapy sessions you'll need after spending a year at UT. You only get one shot at freshman year--don't blow it at UT. This school will take all faith you had in humanity and crush your dreams in the process. If you are accepted anywhere else, attend that school. You can always transfer to a better school--which is what you'd be doing anyways after you realize how much of a nightmare UT is. Seriously, don't go here. You'll regret it.

But hey, the weather's nice.
