Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I lived in Texas my whole life, mostlyAverage
I lived in Texas my whole life, mostly in South Texas. Austin is supposed to be diverse. A recent incident near UT on Dec. 6, 2015, reinforces my belief that people here can be close minded. People are divided on politics. I've never witnessed anyone change their mind on politics. Maybe, I don't get out much. But I would not talk politics unless you want to sacrifice your marketability for a cause.

I believe that some of the most open minded and intelligent people of the world live here. But anywhere, there seems to be the lowest denominator that crosses a spectrum of economic backgrounds. I'm in my 40's now. Where ever you are, you need to mentally brace yourself for the next incident to happen to you. Your rose tinted glasses will turn to amber.

If I had to do it again, I'd go to junior college for academic, social and financial reasons. The place is so big. If you can deal with the academic attributes of a big school, I believe the academic programs here are good. If you are well prepared and have a good study habit someone can be happy here. Otherwise, I'd recommend community college. The people there are more friendly, less stuck up. Students in Junior colleges are more inclined to work in study groups like a jogging club. In UTA, they are more independent and competitive like a marathon race.I happen to drive by a anti Iraq war gathering on main street in Houston. Only one person standing. People in the USA live in a bubble. They are brainwashed. Expect what you would hear the media to say regurgitated by someone.

ME department Had a bad apple at ME administrative lady for years, but she got finally fired and things went back to normal. She was hell of a racist. I went to Columbia U after graduating undergrad program here, and Columbia is known more for its rigor and name. However, I studied a lot more at UT, enjoyed a lot more at UT, and I still feel today it was a much more value at UT than at Columbia. Great school in a safe neighborhood!

Question
Picked UT Austin out of 7 other schoolsQuite BrightVideo/Media
Picked UT Austin out of 7 other schools that all accepted me and offered scholarships, and I couldn't be happier. My professors all care a lot about what they are teaching, and who you are - even in classes with 100+ students - and while there is definitely a lot of homework and work to do, it's interesting for the most part, and worth it. Student body has been overall very friendly and approachable, as are professors. Dorms are pretty average but not bad. Campus is beautiful, and there's a million things to do in Austin. Nightlife is very fun. There is a required core curriculum of like history, math, english etc and I think that would both me more if I hadn't taken advantage of AP credits - if I had to take all of the core classes, instead of just the few I didn't place out of, I would probably have a less interesting course schedule. My academic advisor is incredibly helpful. Financial aid is ok - this was actually the only school not to offer me any scholarships. I would just definitely recommend this school to anyone - the school spirit is incredible, the academic reputation is great, and there's a million and one things to do for fun. Come here!
