Positive Negative Neutral Advice
If you're thinking about going here and youQuite BrightUndecided
If you're thinking about going here and you have the option of anywhere else in VA, even community college, go there. This school was an absolute waste of my time and money. All the negative reviews on here are absolutely true. What I haven't heard much about is the res life department. It is absolute shit. If you want to move out, switch roommates, etc. there's no luck here. RA's and everyone all the way up to the director do not want to help you. Every RA is two faced. Just hope you get a perfect roommate so you don't have deal with this.

As for the people and social scene: Half the people are on a quest to get wasted every night of the week and the other half are in christian clubs (similar to frats) and shun you if you're not. My first semester, when most people made friends in their dorms/ orientation group right away, I was forced out of my comfort zone and joined countless clubs and activities to find my 'niche'. I was determined to make JMU work for me. Second semester and still no niche, because most people meet friends at parties or in their sororities. People find their friends at drunken parties and want to keep those friends because they are close minded and don't want to deal with anyone different from them. During my year there, I've heard countless other horror stories about roommates, the social scene, etc and only wish I'd heard them sooner. I had never really heard anything bad about JMU until I got there, it's like a cult. I'm transferring, and wish I'd gotten out at spring semester. don't go to this shithole.

The University is great, but unfortunately the surroundingBrightAccounting
The University is great, but unfortunately the surrounding town (Harrisonburg) is not. It has a "small town" feel (in a bad way) in that the locals can be resentful of students and outsiders. This has escalated terribly since the "Springfest" riot (see YouTube). Local businesses like the apartment rental companies and the towing companies prey on students relentlessly. The police department and local court are of litte help with matters other than those that are revenue-raising to them. However, JMU is a great school to attend as long as you can tolerate intolerant people, you're okay with racial slurs, and you have enough savings to give to unscrupulous businesses and the local government.

As an out of state student i wouldNot so bright
As an out of state student i would never recommend this school to anyone. I am transferring out as a sophomore, the school is horrible. the parties now blow and as for professors you would come across more that you strongly dislike than you would like especially in the COB program. prior to being here they make it seem like it amazing and they only make the school nice for choices week, other than that there is nothing so special at this school. parking here is a huge issue and i never recommend any one to spend the money to even try to be able to park. I have officially sworn off this school and hope that more people will recognize how awful it is and not be tricked by this completely deceiving school.
