| Quite Bright | I start Mary Baldwin College this coming August and I honestly can't wait. Mary Baldwin is completely unlike other women's colleges in the South (such as Sweet Briar or Hollins University). During my visit on campus for my VWIL (Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership) interview, everyone I met was approachable and wasn't afraid to return a smile. Then, while walking into the VWIL office, cadets that were in a meeting jumped up out of their seats and ran to the doorway to meet me! Needless to say, I was shocked. Everyone is extremely friendly, and when I mean everyone, I do mean everyone--including the mess hall staff (which, by the way, serves great food and will accomate meals to your liking...within reason). The city of Staunton surrounding the campus is small, but still within driving distance to larger cities, so you can easily go to the mall or the like on the weekends. You need strong legs to navigate this campus, as it is very hilly, so it is best to wear comfortable shoes when meandering around (trust me, you will get blisters and/or a broken foot wearing shoes with thin, high heels). For those worried about not being able to find boys, you needn't worry, as VMI, JMU (for those of you who like to party), UVA, and Bridgewater College are all within driving distance (though UVA takes about an hour and a half of travel time, as opposed to the usual 30 minutes it takes to get to the other three). I totally adore this school (in case you couldn't tell already), and it is definitely worth the sticker cost of tuition (I got a scholarship and grant to help with that and the admissions staff are extremely sweet)! | Education Quality: A+, University Resource Use: B- | | | |

I'm almost finished with my frist year at mbc and I'm dying to transfer. My first semester here I absolutely loved mbc, I did amazing academically and even went to some parties at JMU and Hamden-sydney. However, by the second semester I began to notice unmotivated and downright mean many of the individuals are here. Out of all my friends, I was the only one who got a GPA above a 3.0; the only one who got a gpa above even a 2.0!
If you want to go to a small-women's school where nearly everyone is in a clique/group and though people will sometimes smile at you, they will never want to hang out and talk. Many of the women are academically unmotivated and some are just unintelligent. There are three main groups of people-PEGS(the gifted 12-17 year olds who live on campus); VWILL(a military/rotc program) and the regular residential people. Each group mainly associates only with eachother, and then they split up into smaller clique like groups who spread malicious rumors and drama is everywhere.
The food is pretty bad, there's nothing to do on the weekends as everyone leaves and everything's closed. The only good things are the professors are amazing! Very helpful and some are just hilarious in class; a lot of characters. The library, though it doesn't have a huge selection is very pretty and comfy; good place to study. Lastly, the college is gorgeous, and has a lot of history. Just a block away is downtown Staunton, VA where there is a movie theator, several very good coffee shops, a few cute stores and some restaurants, however most places are closed by 10 pm on the weekends. | Campus Aesthetics: A+, Social Life: D- | | | |
