DO NOT go here if you know what's good for you. School is run down, infested with HUGE roaches, bedbugs and lice outbreaks. No building in the school has air conditioning except for the PEG building (14-year-old who go to college) For ONE year here it costs me as much as 4 years at any other college. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. The food is inedible, there is no place to eat 24/7, the dining hours are short and ridiculous. There's NOTHING to do. No nightlife, nothing fun to do. The surrounding city is dead. The computers are old and out of date, barely working. The gym is tiny and pathetic. You won't get any scholarships from the school if you didn't do perfect in high school or are white. The faculty is rude and impossible to contact. The only good things is the classes that they do offer (slim pickings) are good and the professors are nice. Complete waste of my time and money, I'm transferring ASAP if any college will even accept my credits from this joke of a college.

I'm sorry, but this place is a dump. Please, PLEASE do not believe a word of the nonsense spewed from their website or PR department. Like many other people who have gone here say, MBC is riddled with ignorant, rude, and lazy people. People are clique-y. If you are not black, a lesbian, or a smoker, don't plan on finding friends.

If you actually care about your studies, this is not the place to be. The faculty are weird and aloof. If you need help from your advisor, don't expect it. I received the worst help ever from my advisor as a Freshman. She had me in all kinds of ridiculous classes. Now that I am at a real college and know what's up, I realize that her help was essentially the "blind leading the blind" so to speak.

Also, don't get me started about the dorm life. I know all Freshman dorms are on the low-end of nice, but it was more of the people living there and the rules that ruined it for me. Many of the people living on my hall were rude, obnoxious, and downright violent to each other at times. Also we had people defecating in the bathroom NEXT TO the toilet. I am not making that up. I could not make stuff like that up.

Then there is the PEG program. This is for children as young as 12 who are "gifted." I met some girls who did seem bright for their age, but many others just have idiot parents looking to dump them on someone else....I.E. the school. They take classes with the college-aged women and are often too immature and lacking in world experience to be participating in college level classes and discussions. This takes away from the learning experience of the older students. Bottom line: MBC is a bad school and a terrible place in general. I learned this the hard way; my review is completely honest. I'm trying to save someone else from going through what I did. Why not consider Hollins or Sweetbriar, which are within 2-3 hours of MBC and are also women's colleges....only not ghetto. (I am currently at Hollins and I LOVE it!) I was excited to attend MBC as a Freshman, and worked hard in highschool so that I could get into a good college. MBC not only deceived me about being a "good" college, but they broke my heart. I left after the first semester. Their advertising is completely false and they put on airs when you visit. It is a disappointment waiting to happen if you have any expectations at all.

I began Mary Baldwin excited because I thought that I would be attending a college that would have a positive and challening learning environment. I WAS WRONG!!!

Personally, I did not find the academics at MBC that challenging. A great deal of it felt like busywork. That said, there are some good professors at MBC that work hard to make classes interesting.

Socially, MBC is a mess!! I think they need to be waaay more selective about what types students they let in. It seems as if a lot of the students they let in are the girls that could not get in anywhere else. Of course there are the exceptions, but a great deal of the girls at MBC are very rude, ill mannered, unintelligent, and vile in the way that they treat one another. This is not the place where you will be able to have intellectual conversations outside of the classroom with other students. Well, unless you consider gossiping and fighting intellectual.

Sadly, MBC was a very big disappointment for me. I decided to transfer to a better college. From the looks of it most people who begin MBC transfer. Make sure you check MBC's retention rate it's quite low. I really wish that I had done better research before I applied.
