All around, Mary Washington is not a bad school. It's just nothing great. Most people here are really nice and friendly, and you won't find too many assholes. The campus life is pretty dull. If you can make your own fun you will be alright, but for the most part you will struggle to find something to do. The clubs here aren't great. Not too many people get involved or take them seriously.

Academically it is mediocre. Some classes will be really hard but most are a breeze and don't require a real amount of work to succeed in. Getting by with a B average will be easy. I had a 3.75 gpa my first semester there and I felt like it was too easy. No one there is really interested in academics and it seems to be a safety school for many (it was for me).If you are looking for a laid back, relaxing college experience, UMW is a good choice. If you want to be challenged or have more of the stereotypical college experience, go elsewhere. That's what I'm doing.

I went to UMW for 2 years and I had a huge problem with the social life there. The nature of the school is small town suburbia and mostly female school. Most are from VA and went home on weekends. When I happily left, there was still no diversity , no real vigor within the campus as a whole. The classes were definitely difficult and the school is gorgeous but the administration has so much red tape and I switched to a more fitting school for me. You join clubs and they would never socialize as a group on weekends. I found the general student body to be unapproachable , high school cliquey . While I understand if you are on a sports team you have a certain bond there but outside of athletics if you go to UMW accept that you will not have a social life at all no matter how hard you try. I can honestly say that I wasted half my college career at an all out terrible school that made me completely miserable. I don't miss the people, the area, the academics, nothing! The only niche one would fit there is VA resident, homebody, who probably has their nose in the air. Though I am supposed to graduate in May from another school , I am in retrospect, glad to be staying a bit longer because I lost 2 years of my life in "Fredvegas". Please, I urge prospective students and perhaps even current, to not attend UMW.

Although the University is improving, there is little to do in Fredericksburg and social life seems isolated and there are very few campus events on or off campus. No fraternities or sororities, no football, and no real school spirit at all. However downtown fredericksburg is a fun, uncommericialized place on the weekends.
