Although the University is improving, there is little to do in Fredericksburg and social life seems isolated and there are very few campus events on or off campus. No fraternities or sororities, no football, and no real school spirit at all. However downtown fredericksburg is a fun, uncommericialized place on the weekends.

I HATE THIS SCHOOl MORE THAN ANYTHING.
My background: I came here as a transfer student from community college. I spent two years at community before transfering here and have 3 more years left. I came in midyear of the 2008-2009 school year, and made only 2 FRIENDS.

My primary complaint about the University of Mary Washington is that the people, mainly the girls, are extremely unfriendly. Every time I try to make small talk with someone, typically girls, they act as though I am intruding on them. Most of them have the personality of a dry fart, and are quite simply not very interesting people once they are removed from a classroom setting.

There are pretty much four types of guys at this school: creepy guys, gays, hopelessly nerdy types, and a guy who thinks hes awesome because he's on a division 3 sports team. There is a tremendous lack of masculinity/femininity around the campus unless backwards hats and chicks who practically walk around with rape whistles around there necks is your idea of those two concepts.

The social life here...I mean, lack of social life is actually painful and depressing. I can't tell you how many weekends I spend couped up inside my apartment/dorm(when I lived in one) watching tv or youtube videos and single handedly making brazzers the number one porn site on the internet.

The academics here are hard as hell, but interesting. I like my classes and my major. The professors here will help you during office hours if you approach them.

Fredericksburg isnt such a bad town. However, there are a lot of homeless bums. Im 21 so I can hit bars whenever I please. As mentioned previously, the school is full of weird people who don't the first thing about having a good and enjoying their youth. The first thing I noticed when I came to this school is that the overwhelming/vast majority of d-bags at this place are the kids you didn't even know existed in high school. They are EXTREMELY cliquish (I think their cliquishness is an extension of their insecurity in groups and acts as a security blanket.

In summation, I hate this place more than anything in my life. Seriously, I hate it so much that I get headaches and can't sleep at night. The academics here are very good, but challenging. Social life...it just sucks, flat out. I feel awful that my parents are paying all this money for me to go here and I don't even like it.I strongly recommend you don't come to this school. If you do so, you will be missing out on some great years.

I agree with previous posters; this school is not geared towards the real world at all. If the school really wants to improve itself, it needs to take a good, long look at its course offerings. There is no nursing program, no paralegal or certificate course offerings, no allied health division, etc. With a hospital just across the street from the school, maybe UMW could start a health sciences program?
