But Roanoke College cares more about gen ed classes than your major classes. The dumb INQ classes will screw you up, and they are hard classes for no apparent reason. Your freshmen seminar class will basically be a specific learning based environment tied into English composition; I had 6 writing assignments in my first semester seminar class. Three of my very best friends left after their freshmen year, and they transferred elsewhere. People here are very close minded and stuck-up. The parties here are close to high school caliber parties, and most of the time there are about 3 fraternity parties on off campus housing per weekend. Some low-key parties during the weekdays. The brothers normally kick freshman males out, and I actually knew some girls who were not able to get into the parties. All in all, Roanoke's professors are basically locals who love the area and adore Roanoke College. Those INQ classes will be a tiring class for you.-And also avoid, suite style living or single rooms because it is easier to meet more people this way, and you can chill out in the common room. Most of the reviews on this site are correct- the good and the bad. It seems as though there are only two types of people at Roanoke College. You have the LAX Bros/Greeks and the Uber-religious/Boring. You pretty much pick which side you are on the first weekend there. Salem is a cute town, but there isn't much to do off campus (even in nearby Roanoke) so your hand is sort of forced depending on which group of people you choose to hang out with. Roanoke is not the epitome of a party school, but if you want a social life at all aside from some cheesy comedy night in the Commons, you doom yourself to weekends in beer-soaked frat houses which is only fun the first few times you do it. During the week (if you're not drunk then), the majority of the campus population is snotty and arrogant. If you don't have money, you have to pretend that you do. The academics are average in every way. I definitely fell in with the more social cliques at Roanoke and was into the party scene, but I was promised that the acadmics would go above and beyond my expectations and that I would be challenged. Wrong. As for the new core curriculum, it sounds like a fresh new idea, but I found myself retaking classes that I had taken through a dual-enrollment program in high school with a hip name slapped in front of the introductory level. Roanoke College is a great place for private/prep/boarding school graduates because campus feels huge to them. To everyone else, it feels just like a normal high school did or worse. If you live within an hour or two of Roanoke, you are probably better off getting lost in the crowd at Radford or Virginia Tech. The surplus of out of state students make those from nearby feel even more ostracized than the rigid social caste system does. OOS kids clique together and the same for in state kids, not that there was an option. For the ASTRONOMICAL price tag that Roanoke carries, I expected so much more than they could offer. Roanoke is great for a lot of people I know. It is everything they dreamed of. Just be sure that everything beyond the perky personal tour guide and stunning campus is great for you. The older dorms are in need of serious attention. The newer ones are either reserved for upper-classmen or are nearly impossible to get into unless your parents put your deposit down the day you entered pre-school. In this economy, it's nearly impossible to pay off student debts in a timely manner. It's definitely not wasting your money if you are the slightest bit unsure and if you have an inkling that it isn't for you, then follow your gut. For flaunting a near "Southern Ivy" status in their brochures, Roanoke is simply average in nearly every way. Think long and hard and explore all of your options before considering the school. In about 2009, Roanoke came up with a bunch of different goals and plans to pursue more business and for them to be in the top 100 schools for liberal arts. The INQ courses are basically really hard classes that are more than likely not transferable for obvious reasons. This school is all about business. The prerequisites are probably the most difficult out of all of your classes. I am a senior now, and soon going to VCU for graduate school. Roanoke has its disadvantages and advantages. Oh and if you don't play a sport, your gonna have to wait till second semester to rush a fraternity or sorortiy. Good Luck. And the average gpa is very low, it is really hard to even maintain a 2.8. The classes aren't hard but the professors like giving out low grades because it shows that they are a challenging professor. A lot of professors get jobs here for research opportunities. The average course load per semester is 4 classes a semester; not 5. Some students can choose 5 classes, but it is not recommended. If you go to the professor a lot, then they will give you some slack for a grade bordering the next grade up. Just be aware of this school. Think long and hard.
