Not so bright
Roanoke College on the outside looks very approachable and good academically. But if you you start school 21+ and live off campus you will have a hard time getting with the "campus life." I had started going after serving in the military and the faculty are very helpful in making sure everything goes well. But the lack of diversity in the students and how closeminded some are is unfortunate. The longer I stayed the more I would hear students talking about drinking and doing drugs. Some of the students come from a very good background and seem to lack the understanding that others are not so fortunate. I have met some very smart individuals and people who want to succeed. If you are a bit older and have seen the world I would recommend finding a college with a bit more diversity so it would be easier to relate. But otherwise the academics are great and the professors are extremely helpful. If you are a veteran, there are no veteran organizations and no programs to help you transition (I had just came back from deployment)- if they are going to offer veteran benefits they should have some organization to help us transition with college life.

Be very careful if you are a senior in high school and choosing a school. In about 2009, Roanoke came up with a bunch of different goals and plans to pursue more business and for them to be in the top 100 schools for liberal arts. The INQ courses are basically really hard classes that are more than likely not transferable for obvious reasons. This school is all about business. The prerequisites are probably the most difficult out of all of your classes. I am a senior now, and soon going to VCU for graduate school. Roanoke has its disadvantages and advantages. Oh and if you don't play a sport, your gonna have to wait till second semester to rush a fraternity or sorortiy. Good Luck. And the average gpa is very low, it is really hard to even maintain a 2.8.

The classes aren't hard but the professors like giving out low grades because it shows that they are a challenging professor. A lot of professors get jobs here for research opportunities. The average course load per semester is 4 classes a semester; not 5. Some students can choose 5 classes, but it is not recommended. If you go to the professor a lot, then they will give you some slack for a grade bordering the next grade up. Just be aware of this school. Think long and hard.

Use caution when in the city, Local's tend to treat students badly and do not appreciate the buisness the bring into the town. The local police department tend to target college students and look for ways to get them involved in sting operations against other students.
