I am attending Tidewater Community College to please my parents. I know too many people who go there and it is like being in high school again. Same cliques, same politics, same arrogant rude people. The book keeping is terrible. It took them six months to get my transcripts and testing information on file so it put me behind in my classes. I also got selected for FAFSA verification. They kept losing the paperwork which had confidential information on it. Then they informed me on the day tuition was due that I had to pay several thousand dollars out of pocket. They did not give me enough notice to get finances in order. The people at their financial aid office in Portsmouth are very rude and unprofessional. The students who work the front desk in the advising office text in front of you when you are trying to get information. The school is terrible!

Not so bright
I graduated from TCC with two degrees in Social Science and Business Administration. The school is pretty good in preparing you to move on to upper-class schools. I am currently at ODU and besides an I.T. class that TCC did not offer, I am taking all junior and senior level classes. The educational portion of the school is quite flexible and professors are, on the main part, pretty good. There ARE a#$holes that teach there, so BEWARE.

Now the bad. If you're an "older" student, and do not live with your parents. Do NOT rely on your student aid at the beginning of the semester for room, board, childcare(which are expenses compliant with student aid) and the like. You will end up starving, if you don't have a job. The Financial Aid Office is FULL of incompetents. EXAMPLE: "Are you a U.S. citizen?" in a Spanish accent. One more thing. Don't expect your diploma in the time they tell you either. "Diplomas will be mailed 4 to 6 weeks after your conferral date." Wrong. Although the professors are good at TCC, communication with the administration is relegated to vague dialogue and indecipherable references on their website. Get in, get your work done and get out.

Quite Bright
Traditional classes are pretty small. General Education classes get pretty full but no more than about 50. I love the flexibility and many class times to choose from (even online classes). Professors are respectful and understanding. I also love the resources that the school offers and low-tuition rates. I don't know much about the social life but I don't partake in that anyway since I'm a busy mom and student. Overall, a good school for students who wants to get a good education without the hassles of university life.
