I came to VMI looking to comission into the Army and gain a degree in Civil and Enviromental Engineering. The school definatley has a excellent engineering reputation. The nevatives are that VMI takes up the majority of your time and forces you to manage your time strictly. Also the large amount of rules are difficult to follow.

Not for everyone. The academics for liberal arts majors are easy, especially the first year. Lots of study abroad opportunities. Most faculty are great even for Gen Ed classes. The student body isn't the most open minded. A lot of students get too caught up in the ceremonial aspects of cadetship at the expense of their grades. If you're interested in a military career you should look into ROTC at a civilian school as well. In the words of one cadet "VMI is a collection of people who made a mistake but are too proud to admit it."
