Western is a great place for "regular" high school students from the state to attend - good mix of everything, nothing is overwhelming or particularly intimidating. Beautiful location by the water, lots of opportunities for outdoorsy stuff (hiking, kayaking, jogging, biking, etc). Seattle and Vancouver equidistant from Bellingham (about 90 miles). Many opportunities to get involved on campus through clubs and extracurricular activities, and the school is small enough where you'll be able to actually meet people and network effectively. My only negative feelings toward Western is that I don't feel the school makes higher level student achievement (admission into top graduate schools, study abroad programs, national fellowships, prestigeous internships) particularly attainable - you have to be VERY self-motivated and seek out all the resources possible to make things happen for yourself(for example, I am looking into applying for Fulbright and Truman fellowships, and there are currently no program advisors at Western). On the other hand, there are many local and campus opportunities for internships and volunteer work, and Western offers many diversity, departmental, and merit scholarships.

Western is on the way up amongst Washington schools--it has passed WSU as of 2005. Why? Western is small, for one, and that allows for much interaction with faculty. The engineering dept. is very hands-on and widely known, the environmental studies is top-notch, befitting of WA state, and the history department is enviable. The Woodring School of Education at Western is the best place in WA state to get a teaching certificate, the Vehicle Research Institute (VRI) performs cutting-edge research (often leading students to jobs at Boeing), and the computer science dept. has an excellent relationship with Microsoft.
The campus is gorgeous, unlike any other I've seen, full of trees, lots of greenspace, and incredible views of Bellingham Bay. And spring weather! Simply amazing: 70-77 degrees, cloudless with slight wind fresh off of the Bay. Winter weather is no different than Seattle drizzle, but Fall is somewhat warmer, with perhaps more rain. The air is crisp and fresh, thanks to the proximity of the ocean, and one edge of campus touches Sehome Hill, an undeveloped part of campus perfect for hiking, or enjoying a great view in the evenings (you can see Canada from the Look-out Point).
Students are friendly and open, if predominantly liberal, and the music/theater scene is great. Bellingham is a nice city, for that matter, and a young one at that. Many shops are local and independently-owned, such as Rudy's Pizzeria, the patron pizza-saint of every Western Viking. Parking can be a hassle downtown, but walking is great in Bellingham--it's a pretty city.

I transferred from UW and this was the best decision of my life. Not only do you get taught by PROFESSORS instead of TA's, but you are also exposed to the nicest people around. UW is a very cut throat and racist place. I never felt welcomed and the faculty never talked respectfully to me. However, it is completely the opposite at WWU. Everybody is open to diversity and I have never felt discriminated against. The Ops management program is one of the best on the West coast and i can attribute to that because it has a 100% hire rate with the starting salary at around $68000.

I transferred here from the University of Washington about a year ago to go to Western's business school. So far it has been an absolutely terrible school. UW has a lot of TA's but no one ever mentions the fact that it gives you many more options to get help, and despite what people think I was never taught by a TA while I was there. UW also has far more resources to help you succeed, such as tutoring centers, CLUE(which is basically a series of sessions at night to help you with a particular class you are struggling in), etc. Plus at Western every class is only worth 3-4 credits, which makes it harder to graduate on time. Most of my teachers here have been completely incompetent. I just feel like I am getting thoroughly screwed out of a education by Western. The funny thing too is Western is all about busy work and not actually learning. I feel like I have wasted a great deal of time and learned very little since I came here. WWU is more of a glorified high school than a university and I would strongly recommend going somewhere else.
