If you are looking for a graduate school in which you are treated as an underling with no valuable input--WVU HSC is the place! If you want your coursework to be didactic and pedantic--THIS IS THE PLACE!
On the other hand, if you value integrating knowledge, love to learn, and want to be treated with respect--I'd advise you go elsewhere or at least look into other departments. This department is run by a 'good ol' boy's network' and if you anger one of them, the other four will align. The Network permeates not only this department, but what I've heard from other students confirms that it runs higher. The person on staff who is supposed to be your advocate is really the man assigned to pat you on the head and make you see the faculty's point of view. You will not be treated like an adult here; but if you can kiss butt appropriately and accept that grad school here is about learning how to play the political game--a "cotillian for eggheads" (apologies to whomever I stole that from--it was a beautiful line!), then head on over.
Faculties members in this department have been overheard by many, many students disparaging their "quality of graduate students." They believe the grad students are the problem without looking at themselves for one second. With the quality of education at other universities so premium and the disparity between the treatment there and the treatment here, I would highly recommend you try elsewhere. WVU has a reputation as 'sucking' for a reason--don't let the lure of the new neuroscience center suck you in, don't let geography limit you even if you think you're stuck in this region. If I could change my course, I'd go to one of the other schools to which I applied and was accepted and leave that sparkling new building (which, of course, we learn will not even be done until long after we graduate!) to some other sucker. | | Nov 10 2004 | Unknown | | |
