“The Oregon State University Mars Rover Team won third place at this year's national University Rover Challenge, hosted by The Mars Society. The three-day competition took place at the Mars Desert Research Station in Hanksville, Utah. According to Jesse Grimes, a student in mechanical engineering and a member of the Mars Rover Team, the location was chosen because the landscape is similar to what would be experienced on Mars.”

A look back on the Beaver baseball season
by The Daily Barometer
Jan 01, 2018
“The Oregon State University baseball team won the Corvallis Regional but fell to Vanderbilt University in decisive fashion in Nashville, Tenn. a week and a half ago.
The Beavers came up one stop - two wins and a lot of runs - short of returning to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time since 2007, when they won their second of back-to-back national titles.”

Bolting early: WHY?
by The Daily Barometer
Jan 01, 2018
“If there's one thing I've learned this year, it's that I don't want to be the guy who singles out collegiate athletes.
I'm not afraid to bash a team that underachieves, but I've learned that it's not as fair to personally attack a single student athlete who's out there giving his all.”

Saving money on the summer weddings
by The Daily Barometer
Jan 01, 2018
“It's that time of year again. With the onset of summer, weddings come as abundant as the pollen in the air.
And considering our demographic, from now until our early 40s, we should expect to see many numbers of family and friends set off to get hitched. Whether it be your cousin, old neighbor, brother or best friend, chances are that somebody you know is sealing the deal sometime soon.”

Concerns with bicycle safety on campus
by The Daily Barometer
Jan 01, 2018
“Oregon State University likes to present itself as a sustainable, "green" and environmentally conscious university. In large part, this is true; we use far more renewable energy than any other school in the PAC-12, and there are many sustainability projects and groups on campus.”

Finding solar at the nation's capital, again
by The Daily Barometer
Jan 01, 2018
“In the late '70s, in respect for the sun and the infinite energy it gives us each and every day, former President Jimmy Carter installed over 30 solar panels on the White House roof to heat water.
At the installation ceremony, Carter said the solar heater behind him could be "a museum piece, an example of a road not taken or it can be just a small part of one of the greatest and most exciting adventures ever undertaken by the American people.”

Another tuition raise
by The Daily Barometer
Jan 01, 2018
“With Oregon State University achieving record levels of enrollment and research money raised, all while still paying its instructors below the national average, it leads us to ask the question: Why is the state board of higher education raising tuition rates once again?
Oregon is still suffering from a recession that continues to have no end in sight, and those expensive college degrees have less market value than they once did, as recent college graduates are having a harder time than ever finding employment.”

Beaver baseball: the beat writer's thoughts
by The Daily Barometer
Jan 01, 2018
“I write this from the sports desk at The Daily Barometer.
This was supposed to be written from the press box of TD AMERITRADE Park in Omaha, Neb.
At least, that's how it all played out in the imaginations of many Beaver fans.
The Oregon State University baseball team didn't reach the College World Series.”

Pet of the Week
by The Daily Barometer
Jan 01, 2018
“Bandit recently lost his best friend, a dog named Finch, who recently went died. They used to spend their afternoon smelling one another and running around Avery Park, but now Bandit is forced to sniff by himself. Although he may look intimidating to some, he is actually quite a wimp.”
