'Stephen King of indie-pop' hits Cafe Coda
by The Orion
Jan 01, 2010
“He's called the "Stephen King of indie-pop" by music critics, but that doesn't fully capture Chris Robley's technique or style.
Chris Robley & The Fear of Heights will play their layered pop Saturday at Cafe Coda. Robley's latest album, "Movie Theatre Haiku," combines crafted instrumentals with strong storytelling to form complicated but still accessible music.”

Men's golf struggles at Stanford Invite
by The Orion
Jan 01, 2010
“The appearance by the Wildcats at the Stanford U.S. Intercollegiate tournament was their first since 1978.
"I basically begged and pleaded to get us invited," head coach T.L. Brown said. In an otherwise all-Division-I contest, which featured five of the nation's top 20 colleges, the Division-II 'Cats struggled on the hard course.”

Baseball bullpen sweeps Antelopes
by The Orion

Mickartz dominates on his birthday The four-game series started Friday as the Wildcats pitching ace, Pete Mickartz, threw a complete game on his 22nd birthday.”

Editorial: Advisory measures too complicated and vague
by The Orion
Jan 01, 2010
“President: check. Vice President: check. Advisory measure: huh?
One of the most confusing things on the A.S. election ballot is the advisory measure.
The new advisory measure for the spring 2009 ballot reads:
"Should the Associated Students be encouraged to purchase one-third of the food and beverages on campus from producers within Butte and adjacent counties?"
"Encouraged"? What does that mean? Should we poke them with a long, pointy stick until they do it? The wording of the measure leaves much to be desired as far as financial impact and specific details of how to make this actually happen.”

Tax Day Protest: Hundreds descend on City Plaza
by The Orion
Jan 01, 2010
“Chants of "USA, USA" and "lower taxes" rang out through a crowd of hundreds during part of a nationwide tea party tax protest April 15 in City Plaza. Protesters demanded lower taxes, smaller government and increased border security, and warned about the dangers of socialism from 11 a.”
Increased shootings indicate lack of appreciation for life
by The Orion
Apr 21, 2009
“Ding, Dong, Die.
Ever played that game? Me neither. That was the game 19-year-old Edward Mike Ji made up and was playing three years ago when he shot 17-year-old Bryan Chevalier when he answered the door, according to an article in the Dallas Morning News.”

Eric Wendt: Dear Chico
by The Orion
Apr 21, 2009
“Dear Chico,
Nice bathing suit. You're so right, floral prints never go out of style. Want me to rub some lotion on your back?
Anyway, did anyone catch Billy Bob Thornton's recent radio interview in Canada? The video has officially gone viral and it illustrates the sheer depths of douche-baggery an actor can sink to.”

Women's national tournament run sunk by Navy team
by The Orion
Apr 21, 2009
“After starting the season with 12 rookies, the Chico State women's rugby team overcame its inexperience to make it all the way to the Elite Eight in the Division-II national tournament in Sanford, Fla.
With the team competing against the nation's top 16 rugby teams, it's an accomplishment in itself, said senior flanker Stephanie Deras.”

Natalia Ferruggia: You gotta earn it
by The Orion
Apr 21, 2009
“MVP awards are cool, the Super Bowl trophy is dope, but polls are just plain whack.
While Internet browsing, I read on the Chico State athletic Web site that the 'Cats baseball team was recently ranked No. 4 in the inaugural NCAA West Regional Poll, which was released last week.”

Butte Humane Society not as nice to people as they are pets
by The Orion
Apr 21, 2009
“I love pussies and bitches. And by that, I mean kitties and puppies. But, Butte Humane Society makes me mad enough to kick a squirrel in the face.
Our little rescue center was recently in the top 10 of animal shelters in the running for a million-dollar makeover from ZooToo.”
