Displaced residents find shelter with DeKalb Park District by Northern Star OnlineAug 24, 2007“City Manager Mark Biernacki has announced that the shelter for residents who have been displaced by the recent flood will be moved to the DeKalb Park District Sports and Recreation Center, 1765 South 4th St. effective at 2 p.m. Friday. The original collection center at NIUs Campus Recreation Center will close at 1:30 p.m.
Biernacki expressed gratitude to NIU for their quick response in setting up the collection center shortly after midnight and the willingness of the Park District to offer their aid. The Park District facility is better suited to serve for a longer period. -The above was taken directly from a DeKalb press release.”
More rains still to come by Northern Star OnlineAug 24, 2007“DeKALB | NIU staff meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste predicts upcoming rain showers and a slight increase in flooding on campus this afternoon.
After heavy rainfall and severe flooding, many of DeKalbs roads and bridges have been closed. After several NIU buildings flooded and were closed down, campus was declared closed to all non-essential personnel and operations. Sebenste also said there is more rain headed toward DeKalb, but the worst parts of the storm have passed.”

Floods run wild in DeKalb area by Northern Star OnlineAug 25, 2007“DeKALB | Rampant floods have forced NIUs campus to close and DeKalbs Cornfest, NIUs Friday Fest and all District 428 classes have been cancelled for today.
This is unprecedented flooding, said DeKalb fire chief Lanny Russell. We kept the firefighters from last nights shift. We have double coverage. I am in the process of declaring a state of emergency, said mayor Frank Van Buer. The less traffic we have the better.”
Letters to the Editor by Northern Star OnlineAug 08, 2007“Ron Paul a fresh choice
In this day and age of politicians pandering to special-interest groups, changing their message depending on the audience and outright flip-flopping, [Rep.] Ron Paul is a breath of fresh air. Finally, we have someone who says what he means and means what he says. Although some might disagree with his ideas, Dr. Paul speaks his mind with a flair of honesty and integrity not found in other presidential candidates. For those who dont know, Ron Paul is a medical doctor who served 5 years in our armed forces as a flight surgeon. A 10-term Congressman, Ron Paul has consistently voted for limited government and fiscal responsibility. He never once voted for a tax increase or an unbalanced budget. Even more impressing, Ron Paul was against the Iraq war back when it was political suicide to oppose it. But history has proven that he was right all along. And who better to fix our health care system than a doctor?”
Access to Plan B should be a medical, not moral, issue by Northern Star OnlineAug 08, 2007“Morality isnt a black-and-white issue.
Last week, U.S. District Judge Jeanne Scott upheld a Wal-Mart pharmacists right to refuse to dispense Plan B, an emergency contraceptive. Wal-Mart put pharmacist Ethan Vandersand on unpaid leave in 2006 after he refused to provide Plan B to a Planned Parenthood nurse practitioner, requesting the medication on behalf of a female patient. Scott ruled that Vandersand was protected under the Illinois Right of Conscience Act, legislation that allows pharmacists - and other health care workers - to refuse medical services on moral grounds.”
The Rant by Northern Star OnlineAug 09, 2007“I was lucky, unlucky, happy, sad and a whole range of other emotions on Sunday night.
I was lucky because I had a ticket to see the Cubs in the rubber match against the Mets. I was unlucky because Tom Glavine got 300 at my game. OK, it was cool knowing I saw a guy get 300 wins, but Ive never been so depressed at a historical moment.”
From dream to reality by Northern Star OnlineAug 09, 2007“DeKALB | Everything went as planned on Aug. 1, 2007 for NIU athletics, as the Jeffrey and Kimberly Yordon Center opened.
The new 62,000-square-foot facility will house NIU football, athletic training and serve as an academic center. Its no different from anything else; you have to reinvest in your infrastructure, NIU Athletic Director Jim Phillips said. For us, we needed to reinvest in our student athletes, and create a facility for them to succeed at the highest level academically as well as athletically.”
More NIU vs. Iowa tickets available for students by Northern Star OnlineAug 09, 2007“DeKALB | Dont have a ticket for the NIU vs. Iowa game yet? Well dont fear -- that is if youre an NIU student. Although the game on Sept. 1, 2007 has been listed as a sellout over the past few weeks, some tickets have been held back for students to purchase at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. Weve held tickets back for [students] so when they come back to campus they can get a hold of them, NIU Athletic Director Jim Phillips said. Their support means a great deal to us. We certainly want to make it as easy as possible.” | News Topics
