Applications down 5 percent by The HeightsApr 05, 2009“Two weeks ago, the department of undergraduate admissions at Boston College began to mail out decision letters to hopeful high school seniors awaiting the word from colleges in what has been an uncertain year for both the applicants and admissions officials across the country. BC experienced a 5 percent drop in undergraduate applications from last year, receiving a total of 29,300 applicants to the class of 2013. Even with that decrease taken into account, BC typically ranks in the top five private institutions in the country in terms of the volume of applications, according to John Mahoney, director of the office of undergraduate admissions.”

More students pursue vocations by The HeightsFeb 25, 2009“A recent rise in applications to the School of Theology and Ministry (STM) could be proof that Boston College is on its way to accomplishing one of the major tenets of its Master Plan - to become the world's leading Catholic university and theological center. According to an article published by WBZ-TV on Feb. 19, the STM has already received 242 applications, a 70 percent increase from the previous year.
"So far this year, we're up 70 percent," said Sean Porter, assistant dean and director of admission for the STM. Porter said that he thinks there are a number of reasons that the school has experienced a rise in applications. He said that the combined resources of the Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry (IREPM) and the Weston Jesuit School of Theology under the STM have made the school one of the foremost theological centers in the nation. "With the creation of the school of Theology and Ministry, Boston College has the most comprehensive Catholic education institution, certainly in the country," Porter said. Porter said that the school is attracting people from all ages, occupations, and walks of life. "The largest part of the increase is from people who are coming right from their undergraduate years or from after a year of JVC [Jesuit Volunteer Corps] work," he said. "We tend to have fewer second career folks than other schools."”
