This is an incredible school!! I came here for its world class Drama/Theater program and was blown away. It was more intense than I could have ever imagined (remember, this is the school that graduated Jack Klugman, Helen Hunt, Frank Gorshin, George Romero and many others). Before I knew it three years had passed, but it had seemed like months. Don't come to CMU if you arn't prepared to make this school your entire life and home for four or more years. But it has this rare ability to become "home" before you realize it.
If you arn't prepared to sacrifice everything you were for what you want to become this is definately NOT the place to be. On the other hand the faculity, the campus, the parks, and even the buildings make the transformation somewhat painless. Everyone and everything is there for you. They actually want you to succeed. But never forget that they will expect EVERYTHING from you in return. When I was there Dean Mirabian attended every play we put on, and even sent each of the actors personal letters afterwards!! What other school can say that about its dean? It's THAT personal of an education.
    On the downside
The arts students and the engineering students mix like oil and vinegar. There isn't a lot of interaction between the arts and the sciences. Almost none. If you want to major in Computers and minor in Music go somewhere else.
The campus has no bars or shops at all. You have to go over to the Pitt campus for nightlife, and there you're treated like a foreigner if they find out you're from CMU and not Pitt. You're another computer geek or theater goth to the Pitt crowd.
The buildings are really beautiful, and historic, but OLD. Expect noisy window air conditioners, and bathroom sinks with no running water.
There are some great student activities if you have unusual interests (SCA, Robotics Club, Wargamming), but if you're looking for a school for beer parties think again!!
Lastly, this is definately NOT a pick-up school. Everyone you will meet has a brain. Probably a big one.
