I was 17 years old when I joined CSUB (Fall 1991) as an international student from the Philippines, where the method of teaching is strict and dogmatic unlike CSUB where I experienced freedom in the way things are taught and learned. This required much discipline and perseverance on my part as a student. Discipline because any form of freedom can easily be abused and a bane unto one's self; and Perseverance to reach the standard of education imposed by CSUB -- a standard that puts in check the freedom that is allowed to the student.

Much could have been done during my three years and a quarter tenure at CSUB (major in Philosophy (pre-law) and minor in Studio Art)(I completed my studies at the end of Fall 1994). My frustration is that I was not able to [1] join an art exhibit; [2] contribute to the research work or books of my professors; and [3] become part of the student council. Being part of, or able to contribute to a cause would have made my tenure more fulfilling.

I suggest for any freshmen to join an organization (not necessarily a fraternity or sorority) and become part of (as an assistant or otherwise) any university department. That will help you integrate yourself with the system faster and easier. But so joining will entail utmost support and unceasing effort for the cause that you have taken upon yourself, especially if you work for any department of the university. Such will help build your character and prepare you for professional life.

Stay at the university's dormitory during your freshmen year at the least. I had the most fun at the dorm. There you will meet a variety of people and learn how to deal with them on a personal level. That will help unburden any student of whatever reservation they may still have with respect to other races/cultures. On my part, I surrounded myself with Americans (of whatever color, culture, or religion), Europeans, and Asians. We called ourselves the "United Colors of Bakersfield." No one nor group dared bother us. And since we represented almost every nationality or culture found on campus, most groups were drawn to us and best of all, respected us.

If I were to go through college for the second time, I would still think of going to CSUB.
