    Seeing that I graduated B.N. (before Nintendo)it is quite possible that my opinions are obsolete. However, I do believe that just having a four year college degree in ANY major opened doors for us. Much more so than today. Once hired it was performance/merrit that made a difference and not where you had graduated college. Retailing in the 1970's was very competitive and my job required serious business skills that a liberal arts degree did not prepare me for....this was my problem, not the company which employed me. None the less, I survived and thrived and only left the business to start a family. Somehow today Penn State has much more cache that it did back in the 70's. I believe that it has done an excellent job of evolving into the research university it is today. Your initial question amuses me, as how can any education let alone a college education HURT? I believe that I should have acquired business management skills and I should have acquired a masters degree before having a family. I recommend that H.S students carefully consider what they want to do. This is difficult because many 18 year olds have no clue as to what they want to do as their vocation. However, a college education is an expensive commitment and is not the only road or necessarily the best road to success. Where I live the carpenters and plumbers and landscapers are always employed. On the other hand the software and computer techs are having to relocate..go figure. I truly believe that no education is ever wasted no matter how old you are.
