My overall experience at Barnard was very positive. I transferred from a large university and was pleasantly surprised to find how friendly the staff and students were.
Economics was the most popular major for my year and I think it is usually in the top three most popular along with Psychology and English. Barnard's diversity is much acclaimed and to some extent truthfully so- but still not reflected in the faculty. I didn't go to Barnard because it was a single sex school but in hindsite I really think it can make a positive difference in terms of the atmosphere - in class and out.I went to Barnard because I wanted to go to a liberal arts college so I was surprised by the complications caused by the Columbia connection. Some people are snooty and judge you ( and themselves )via things like the name of the school they go to and the labels they wear. These people should be ignored since there are lots of other interesting people to talk to! I had a blast playing intramural sports with a mixed team of Barnard and Columbia women. Barnard's food is pretty decent if not yummy in comparison to the school I transferred from and my friends' cafeterias in other schools. Barnard is a safe space for lgbtq students which I think is a great thing (a lot of the rest of the world isn't, ya know?)
If belonging to a sorority is part of your life plan this might not be the best place for you although my roommate helped to create a kappa phi lambda chapter while we were there.
