i AM AN ALUM, 1981, OF THE SCHOOL OF PHARMACY. THE YEARS I SPENT A UCONN WERE SOME OF THE BEST IN MY LIFE. I HAVE BEEN IN HOSPITAL PHARMACY MY ENTIRE CAREER, OPTING TO USE THE CLINICAL EDUCATION I RECEIVED AS OPPOSED TO FILLING RETAIL SCRIPTS AT A HUGE CHAIN. i FEEL THE MAIN BENEFIT I RECEIVED FROM MY UCONN EDUCATION WAS AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL FIELDS. I WAS ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAIN ALL THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE AND JOURNALS, IF I DID NOT KNOW THE ANSWER TO A QUESTION I COULD FIND IT, AND NOW WITH THE INTERNET THIS HAS BECOME A BREEZE. FOR WHAT I DO THERE WAS VERY LITTLE HANDS ON TRAINING,SUCH AS ACTUAL INTRAVENOUS ADMIXTURE PREP,WHICH WE DO A TON OF, BUT THAT IS AN ON THE JOB, EASILY LEARNED SKILL. I HAVE ALWAYS SAID I REMAIN IN MY JOB BECAUSE I AM CHALLENGED DAILY AND I LEARN SOMETHING DAILY. I AM ALWAYS ASKED TO FIND OUT NEW INFO FOR THE MEDICAL STAFF AND THIS KEEPS THE JOB FRESH. IT HAS BEEN A BATTLE FOR RESPECT IN SOME QUARTERS, IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY, FAIRFIELD COUNTY,CT. DOCTORS HAVE BEEN VERY RELUCTANT TO PART WITH ANYTYPE OF CONTROL, EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE MINIMAL PHARMACOLOGY TRAINING, AND THERAPEUTIC SUBSTITUTION ETC HAVE BEEN SLOW IN REACHING US BUT WE STRUGGLE ON. I DIGRESS...BACK TO UCONN, THE HEAVY DRINKING AND "SLEEPING AROUND" WHICH YOU READ SO MUCH ABOUT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE, WHEN I WAS THERE THE DRINKING AGE WAS 18 AND THE LIQUOR STORES DELIVERED TO YOUR DORM ROOM DOOR. THESE THINGS HAVE CHANGED, YOUR EXPERIENCE IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT, DO NOT DEPEND ON OTHERS TO SHOW YOU A GOOD TIME, YOU WILL FIND LIKE MINDED PEOPLE IF YOU JUST EXPEND A BIT OF EFFORT, I WAS NOT A BIG PARTIER, BUT MY ROOMATE WAS AND THAT WAS FINE, WE DID OUR OWN THINGS, MADE OUR OWN FRIENDS AND ENJOYED A GREAT MANY LAUGHS AS WELL. YOU HAVE TO LOVE NATURE, AND WIDE OPEN SPACE, I DID AND LOVED THE ENVIRONMENT, THE CITIES AND OTHER COLLEGES ARE REALLY NOT FAR AT ALL, ESPECIALLY IN THIS SHRUNKEN, FAST PACED WORLD WE LIVE IN, I DRIVE AN HOUR TO GET TO MY JOB, IT WAS NOTHING TO GO TO AMHERST, OR PROVIDENCE OR BOSTON OR THE BEAHCES FROM STORRS, AND THERE SEEMS TO BE SO MUCH MORE TO DO THERE NOW. MY NEGATIVES WOULD BE THAT MY FAVORITE PROFS WERE NOT IN THE SCHOOL OF PHARMACY, THOSE GUYS, AND I MEAN GUYS!!!, THERE WAS ONLY ONE WOMAN IN THE DEPT. AT THE TIME, SEEMED TO BE THERE JUST FOR THE RESEARCH AND TAUGHT BECAUSE THEY HAD TO,VERY FEW WERE TRULY DEDICATED TO OUR LEARNING, HANK PALMER,OF COURSE, WAS AN EXCEPTION, HE ALWAYS HAS HAD THE STUDENTS INTERESTS IN MIND. DR COHEN,TOXICOLOGY, WAS ANOTHER GOOD GUY,NO PROBLEM COMING IN ON HIS TIME TO LET ME TAKE A MAKE UP EXAM BECAUSE I WAS SICK, OTHERWISE WELL LETS SAY I THINK YOU ALL HAVE IT BETTER NOW. ATTENDING THE CE PROGRAMS AT STORRS YEARLY I FIND THAT THE NEW,YOUNGER PROFS SEEM VERY MOTIVATED,MUCH MORE INTERESTING, ALOT MORE DIVERSITY THERE TOO,I FEEL THAT YOU NEED TO BE PROACTIVE AT UCONN. I WISH THAT I HAD MADE A FEW MORE PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS WHEN I WAS THERE, I WISH I HAD TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF MORE OF THE CLUBS, AND ACTIVITIES LIKE THE DRAMA PRODUCTIONS,ART EXHIBITS ETC. BUT I HAVE A SON THAT HAS JUST DECIDED TO GO TO UCONN THIS FALL AND HE WILL GET AN EARFUL FROM A MOM WITH ALOT TO IMPART. i AM SO IMPRESSED WHEN I GO TO UCONN NOW, SO MUCH HAS CHANGED-WHERE WERE THE COFFEE BARS WHEN I NEEDED THE??THEY DIDNOT EVEN FEED US ON THE WENDS!!! KUDOS TO THE ADMINISTRATION AND THE CONNECTICUT STATE GOVERNMENT FOR MAKING MY ALMA MATER ONE OF THE STRONGEST, WELL RESPECTED PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS IN THE NATION.RX IN CT. "
