Back in 1987 BIT was in its early years. I had been attending a major university in the Northwest and was not very satisified with their music department so I got accepted to MI and moved to LA. I had a hard time finding housing, and ended up in a situation that was too expensive for me.
My advice is to make use of MI's newer housing service - you can't make it unless you can pay the bills, believe me.
My first semester included private lessons, and since I already knew how to read music, having played jazz for many years, the private lessons were the best for me, personally. The classes were a waste of time for me because I had too much experience in the real world - I didn't realize Musicians Institute was for real beginners, so if you are coming out of high school or college with chops and you know how to read and sight-read well, you might be wasting your hard-earned money going to MI.
That said, it was really fun sitting in and sight-reading with top LA musicians. Awesome, in fact.
The second semester did not include private lessons. I hope that MI changed that since 1988 because to me that was the most vital aspect to the program. Vital because it was one on one contact, personal service and someone to talk to about the business, someone who is regularly playing gigs in town.
By the spring of 1988, I was getting restless and applied and got accepted to another top university and left MI/BIT to finish my Bachelor of Music, and went on to get my masters degree in music education while playing in local bands and orchestras.
Looking back, most of my friends had gone to Berklee College of Music, and I should have done that rather than Musicians Institute. There was a comment here that said in the real world Berklee is looked at as a more credible education than Musicians Institute, and I would have to agree with that sentiment, however a good player is a good player no matter where they come from. In the end it is up to you to make good music, work well with people and persist.
In the end, I gravitated towards high technology and ended up a software engineer. Heh. There are seven music majors here at work, so don't count out writing code rather than music to pay the bills...seriously.
