"What is Chemistry -- really?"

Undergraduate Chemistry

In theory what is it?
Depending on what area of chemistry you decide to focus on, this is a multi-faceted question. A common theme is synthesis of new, useful compounds, application(s) of said compounds, isolation of new substances from natural sources, analysis of and elucidation of structures of new substances, physical studies of chemical reactions. A chemistry student should be familiar with all of these processes upon completion of a B.S. Most bachelor's programs are designed not to train extensively in one area, but to give a solid foundation for general industrial work or higher education.

What is it used for?
Chemistry majors enter a surprisingly large number of fields; drug companies have become major employers. A chemist in industry might work on new drugs, do research for any number of different manufacturing operations (paints, carpet, plastics, you name it!), or quality control for any of these companies. Government organizations like the FDA and USDA are always in need of chemists, too. It's hard to say exactly what a chemist might do.

What does the major actually entail -- work-wise
Like most physical science programs, chemistry majors usually follow a hierarchical track of courses, in addition to university-mandated general education classes. General chemistry is first; the rudiments of many different areas are discussed at an elementary level. Generally a lab course is taken, they're pretty boring. Organic is next; unfortunately, this tends to serve as a "weeding out" class. There is little involvement of math proper, but the logic used is pretty complicated. You can't b.s your way through this one. Physical chemistry is next in the sequence. This is perhaps the most dreaded of all, especially for the less mathematically inclined. Most of the focus is on thermodynamics and quantum theory. The lab experiments get pretty complex, and the lab reports are usually quite lengthy. Inorganic is the last required course. Metals, molecular orbital theory, bonding, and coordination chemistry are common topics. Also rather heavy on the math (at times). Aside from these requirements, you can take advanced chem electives; advanced organic synthesis, advanced physical, etc.

What kind of jobs do you get with it?
See above.

What are the fellow students like (personalitywise) in it?
Depends on where you go; a lot of kids are just pre-med majors and don't really give a shit about chemistry, but some are really great and creative.

Common Misconceptions
That all chem majors make crack in their dorms, that we do the crack we make in ourdorms, that we sell crack that we make in our dorms, anything related to the making of crack.

    Re: Add a Comment!
i was a chem major class of 06.  the first couple of years when you're taking intro chem, physic, math, and o chem you're in rather large classes with a lot of premeds and other type A's who would die if they got an A- instead of an A, and will nitpick to get a 99 instead of a 95.  once you get into the upper level classes that aren't required for vagelos kids and premeds, your classmates turn out to be pretty chill.  the work load is tough for this major so if you have no study skills like me you'll be pulling a lot of allnighters, but most likely you can find someone to do them with.  study with friends b/c 2 heads are better than one.

the key is to learn quickly how to study (just do it), and take advantage of the great research opportunities.  chat a few times during the semester with your professors and pI's and voila! you've made great connections for life!  the professors in this department are brilliant, but many can be arrogant about it.  notably the biochem profs.  don't let the egos get to you too much.  there's a lot of it flying around at penn.

if you work hard and get good grades, you will get a LOT out of the chemistry program. even if you do half-assed work, party/sleep a lot, and get straight c's, you'll still learn to think in new and interesting ways even though your grades may not reflect it.

Hey I'm a senior in highschool and I'm trying to decide what to major in.  I'm leaning towards pharmacy, but Its tough.  I know it involves a lot of chemistry and math and I just dont know if I can handle it.  What classes did u take in highschool and what grades did u get.  Were u like super smart? Try to get back as soon as possible please!

If you are not VERY good at Chemistry and Science, do not think of going into Pharmacy. If you aced chemistry in highschool and thought it was just fantastic, then you may soon be compounding drugs at the local Walgreens for $85,000/year to start. Don't B.S. it though, if you are an arts person, chances are you are not a pharmacist.

Chemistry is not real! There are really no such thing as molecules.  It is a University scam thought up by the organization for the organized centuries ago.  Do not study this Pseudo-science!  The “moleculesthat you see in the microscope are strategically placed spots on the lenses.  Don't believe me?  Go ahead and major in this, but don't blame me when the employers are scratching their heads saying: “you majored in what?” No one's even heard of this supposed science!  If you think about it, no other science starts with the letters “Ch,” now that is not a coincidence!

i'm from s.a and studying chemistry at the witwatersrand university.
yes chemistry is challenging at times, but the secret to acing it is to do lots of question papers, that way you develop a skill for exams and tests.i promise it works for me too.
but problem is with me... i'm not sure what career path to venture into

I had a hard time deciding what major to go with, but I am very happy I chose Chemistry.  It's thought-provoking and really makes you work for the reward to come.  I am Iraqi so I plan on moving back to Baghdad as they are in need of pharmacists. The pay is excellent, almost twice as much as in the West, and it's satisfying work.  I recommend it to everyone!
