"What is Premed (PreMedicine) -- really?"

Premed (PreMedicine)

In theory what is it?
The Premedicine major is designed for students who wish to apply to medical school at the conclusion of their undergraduate studies. It is difficult to gain admittance into medical school without possessing immaculate grades, an on par or above par score on the MCATS (Medical College Admissions Test), as well as having significant number volunteer work hours. The undergraduate work itself is extremely rigorous and can easily be considered to exist as one of the most difficult majors to complete. Therefore, it takes an extremely dedicated person to complete this major and gain admittance into medical school.

What is it used for?
The PreMedicine major is primarily for students who wish to apply to medical school at the conclusion of their undergraduate studies. On its own this major is not worth much in the real world. It is used as a gateway to gain admittance into medical school where the real knowledge about healthcare is learned.

What does the major actually entail -- work-wise
LOTS AND LOTS OF WORK.

This difficult pursuit into a career in the heart of healthcare demands endless dedication from its challengers. Simply put, this is not an easy major to complete. The student will take classes ranging from English all the way to Biochemistry with everything in between. There will be Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and many electives. After this major is complete it will feel as if you have majored in every single major.

What kind of jobs do you get with it?
After completing the PreMedicine Major which lasts for a very long 4 years, the student will want to apply to medical school. At the completion of 4 years of medical school one can expect to get some of the highest paying jobs. Depending on specialties, salaries can range from $80,000/year all the way up $300,000/year and beyond. This is one of the few majors that gives an extreme sense of accomplishment, even though it is not always easy.

What are the fellow students like (personalitywise) in it?
Most students that pursue this major are dedicated to their work, outgoing, and competitive. They have a desire to do well and succeed at their goals. They are generally extremely strong willed and like to finish what they start.

Common Misconceptions
More often than not, most people realize that this is a difficult major. So only the ones that are willing to do the work and go through all the mental strain apply. Some people think that students enrolled in this major have no life. This isn't entirely true, while they must donate many hours of their time into schoolwork, activities, and trying to be well-rounded, most still find time to be social.

    You just know!
Ok, let me say this one thing that will allow you to relax a little (jst a little) during the duration of your excruciating mentaly straining education...YOU JUST KNOW!  You just know if you're cut out to be a doctor.  It's in you from the begining.  I always knew i wanted to be pre med and I actually started at 21 yrs old (late bloomer) everyone didn't think i could make it!  Well guess what? It doesn't matter because... YOU JUST KNOW deep inside that there is nothing else for you!  Don't stop until you get it!  Make a difference in this world...somebody has to do it!

    Re: Add a Comment!
I think that someone needs to mention that only about 10% of med school applicants get in.  This is a national average. Some of the more competitive are between 3-7%, some of the bad ones are closer to 15%.

There are a lot of people with this major who have fooled themselves into thinking they can get into medical school.  The worst part is acedemic advisors rarely set them right.

Don't memorize and regurgitate like most people because remember that most do not get into medical school.  You will need the knowledge to do well on the MCAT, which is basically all that matters.

ALL OF THE PEOPLE ABOUT PREMED INFO:

u can start premed as soon as you want. There is no wait time watsoever. u need to major in biology and take some premed courses.  Check particular college wat they require.  Then after three years you take MCAT, and if u do good on it and have gooD GPA and had some volunteer work experience then u get into medical school

This is easy stuff compared to all the other european countries.  But if u really want to become doctor, there are some university programs that allows to you to take medschools outside of US such as Europe and Carrebean. ex.  Ross University.  They have such program .but again u will have to do research on it.

I m currently Premed student @ CSUSB 18 years old.  but have experirience

I'm a senior in highschool and i want to be a Pediatrician, or maybe a Pediatric nurse.  For the doctoring part, i dont know where to start. When i graduate from highschool, my parents required me to go to a two year community college first, then transfer out to a university.  Now, when i go to community college, what classes can i take to start me off down my long path to becoming a docter?  I dont know, do i take liberal arts and sciences?  please reply back.

I'm a first year in college, and I am going through the Microbiology major at me school, because they do not exactly have a pre-med program, but microbiology works the same way. I am going to Cal Poly Pomona at the moment, and thinking of transfering to a UC.  Do you think transfering is a good idea? or should I stay at Cal Poly, and finish the 4 years, then go to med school afterwards? I want to be a Pediatrician, and saw that you have to take 4 years of med school and 3-8 years of internship.  I was wondering if it's possible to do internship during the 4 years I am in med school, or is it too much?  Please email me back with more information. Thanks.

Hello.  I am a junior in Highschool in Seattle, Wa and i am very set on becoming a Pediatric nurse.  I am already applying for the U-Doc Highschool summer program available for highschool juniors and I would recommend it to anyone interested in majoring in premed.  I am a running start student hoping to get my A.S. next year as a senior and will be applying to the University of Washington to become a nurse there.  Well, with all that background information, I was hoping that I can get help with my path, giving me some pointers in how to “ACE”[<— not really] the MCAT.  Any Pointers that would help me persue my goals would be just fabulous! Thank you very much and please email me if you wish.

Hello I am freshmen Pre-Med/Biology major. I attend Middle Tennessee State University.  My current GPA is a 3.6.  When all is said and done I am going to be a plastic surgeon.  However, I have no idea how to go about doing this.  All I know is I need to go to Med School.  If there are any Plastic Surgeons or anyone who can tell me the steps to becoming a plastic surgeon please e-mail me at bjc2x@mtsu.edu Also what Dr.  ID said is very true.  My major the summer before I started college was aerospace. Even though my dad is a doctor i was not willing to do all the work to become or so i thought.
By my first day of college i had changed my major to pre-med/biology.  From that point on i became determined to do well in all my classes. I never would have i could work so hard. I guess you just know like Dr.  ID said.
    Biology/Chem.  Rocks!!!!

    Re: Add a Comment!
gosh, this article is really misleading. i'm in medical school right now, and there is no way you can earn that much money after the completion of the 4 years of medical school.  sure, you get an MD at the end of your name after you graduate, but you're still not licensed to practice medicine.  you need at least one intern year to become a “general practitioner” at which point you still don't make much money.  nearly all medical graduates complete a residency program to specialize in a field.  these programs last anywhere from 3-8 years depending on what field you choose and the pay is ~$30,000-50,000 when you first graduate. so if you're aiming for that $80,000-$300,000 annual salary that they mention here, please realize that it doesn't happen until AT LEAST 7 years after you graduate from college at which point you are hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt from all that tuition and you are weary fr
