Deep Springs is very competitiveOct 24 2003Other
Deep Springs is very competitive. Applicants are not only competing for admission, but for the full scholarship associated with it. However, the non-conformist should not be discouraged...

There are three phases (and two cuts) for the Deep Springs Application.
First phase (deadline November 15):

Students must submit three essays, SAT/ACT scores, high school grades, etc. (download the application at
You will be judged primarily on your essays and the quality of your writing for the first round of the application. Successful students generally graduate at the top of their high school class, score 1450-1600 on their SATs, and are exceptional writers.

Advice: Creative writing (prose and poetry) is not to be discouraged on the written application.
Don't lie-- Deep Springs highly values honesty. Falsehood, especially on the reading lists, will be borne out.

After the first round, the Applications committee cuts the applicant list to 40 finalists who are then sent the second round of the application, and invited to Deep Springs for 4-5 days of work and an interview in January or February.

Phase Two (deadline January 15):
The second round application.
Four more essays and the submission of graded papers, high school essays, musical recordings, artistic work, and other creative supplementary materials.

Phase Three:
The Deep Springs Visit and Interview

Advice: Be yourself. Be thoughtful, articulate and fun in your interview. Talk to as many people as possible about their Deep Springs experience. If you aren't pretty excited about Deep Springs after your visit, it probably isn't for you. As beautiful as Deep Springs is, don't be a tourist on your visit. Work as hard as you can: you are visiting to prove yourself.
If you are a jerk in your interview and on your visit, you will not get in.

Second Cut: 13 men are chosen for the first-year class.
ACT: 32 SAT: 1480 Male
