As long as you prove to the admissions people that you are a strong student, you can overcome average SATs. I got a 1880 and still got in. Granted I was in the top 5% of my class and EXTREMELY involved in my school. Interviews are really important- they allow the admissions committee to see you as a person, not just a number. I was able to e-mail my interviewer all year! Just get great grades, be involved, and be real- don't fake who you are because that is more transparent than you could ever imagine.
Math
Good grades, good board schools. I would highly recommend interviewing. Also if you do visit the school, walk around and knock on some doors. I was walking around one of the science buildings, ran into a professor who ended up spending 30 mins with me showing me around the labs etc. These types of run-ins can often result in the prof writing something for the admissions department that can help you get in.
Music - Composition/Theory
Apply early decision, its much easier to get in.
Music - Composition/Theory
show up for an interview and an overnight, get a feel for the campus
Physics
Good Grades, High Test Scores, AP Classes, Visit, all the things you would do to get into a highly competitive school. If you are a minority student or a student of lesser income, don't let the Princeton Review and other commentaries about lack of diversity at Colby scare you away. Come visit and make up your own mind. There is a definite Colby type and it has nothing to do with skin color or money.

Nothing, I was a decent student but some of the other people who got in have clearly never opened a book in their life.
History/Histories (art history/etc.)
I got low A's for the most part at a challenging private high school and participated in many extracurricular activities as well as playing 2 sports.

I was pretty involved in extracurricular activities, the captain of my cross country and track teams, and was in the top 10% of my class. Getting over a 1400 on your SATs helps too I suppose...

Extracurriculars, good grades, and study for the SAT's.
