Essay (11) | Political Science | Aug 13 2008 | I took the SAT, ACT, essays, and an interview (though it is not required. I do not recommend Columbia to those considering it, and wish the those arriving on campus this fall much luck, they're going to need it. History/Histories (art history/etc.) | Aug 20 2005 | I was a world-class fencer on the track to the Olympics and I have known the Columbia Fencing Team coach since I was 13 yrs. old. But other kids I know had a really hard time getting in; about half of my friends got in off the wait-list after pestering their admission officer with letters and phone calls (both every week), visits, and insisting on more interviews.
In terms of getting in, it's very very tough. I actually now help interview for the undergrad school, and trust me, of the 10-15 thousand applications that are received each year for the roughly 1,000 available spots, the majority of applicants are superb, judging from the people that I have interviewed and judging from the comments of some of the other interviewers. Sadly, the size and quality of the application pool means that many quality candidates are turned down. |
