Essay (11) | Columbia gets a LOT of applications from very qualified applicants. The grades and standardized test scores end up being passed over very quickly. What really matters is if you can prove you are an interesting, motivated person with something to offer to the university community. I was the only person from my high school to get into Columbia even though two people with better grades and class rank than me also applied. I stood out because of my specific interests in Columbia and New York, and also because I did a lot more unique and interesting things outside of my academics.  Make sure you're better than everyone in your class. No, I'm seroius. Start planning before high school- get the top grades, stick to one thing you love (I did fencing, got awards, became famous in the field etc) and write a really amazing essay. Suck up to your teachers, the teacher recs would be the MOST important of your application, no kidding there. Then you need luck. I did what everyone else will tell you they did to get in. Getting good grades is a plus, but Columbia is really looking for unique people who are special and have something spectacular to offer the school and the world. Good luck! Political Science

Keep your grades up. Also, build up an impressive resume. Volunteer and join clubs, but make sure to take leadership roles. Do not just create a laundry list. |
