There's a rumor going around that the school doesn't accept anyone with an HS GPA of less than 3.5 unless they play sports or have done some significant research. It is virtually impossible to graduate in 4 years if you don't transfer AP credits in, also. At least 3 or 4 classes is recommended.

Work on your grades! Get involved in your community and extra curricular activities, including sports. William and Mary wants the best and brightest and yet well-rounded students.

1. skip the senior year slump and really buckle down. high grades in senior year will stand out above those who drop. it also indicates to reviewers you are capable of college work.
2. pick an activity and stick with it. a sport or a musical instrument. reviewers like someone who can keep themselves busy and show diversified interests. bear in mind there is virtually nothing to do in the neighboring town, so extracurricular activities driven by YOU are very important.
3. initiate and carry through at least one social event that you can talk about on your app. See #2 for why.
4. work very hard on your narrative portion of your app.

Getting into William and Mary for me was very difficult. I had a 1490 on my SAT's and a 34 on my ACT and that alone did not suffice for entry into a College where most applicants have just as good scores. The essays and supplement requirements are a very useful way to convince the admissions team of your individuality not just a super clever robot, so make good use of it if you don't necessarily have the grades to back yourself up. Needless to say W&M ranks one of the highest Unis in the nation and so they will be looking for those who go the extra mile in sports activites etc.
