I would reccommend starting the proccess early, and keeping your options open. Even if you're not sure you want to go to a certain college, getting the essays and applications early allows you to get feedback from a variety of places, including acceptance and scholarships. Personal visits are also a good way to get to know the college and establish a personal connection that can lead to many different oppotunities once you attend that college.
