whether you're in or you're out. chances are you are out. MICA doesn't waitlist people, this is because they dont have to worry about their top pick applicants choosing another school over them. Its one of the few schools that does this.

Be daring.

Not much. I applied at the last minute by the advice of my design teacher, who actually said to me it was likely I wouldn't make it (considering MICA is pretty selective). I made it as a graphic design major, but included a number of paintings and drawings which probably helped out a lot. They like variety.

MICA requires a strong art portfolio. Although admission isn't extremely selective, scholarships are highly competitive. I received a very large merit scholarship. My portfolio consisted of paintings and drawings, and a few sculptures. My portfolio was comprised of entirely observational work: self-portraits, figures in an environment, still-lives and landscapes. I submitted work done in oil, acrylic, watercolor, ink, soft-pastel, conte, pencil and charcoal.
My GPA was a 3.9 out of a 4.0 and my SAT was a 1300
I also submitted a resume which included all of my local, state-wide, and national art awards.

they will only look at your portfolio. so having a good body of work (not just quantity) is a must.

1) Portfolio (include imaginative + observational pieces)
2) gpa (above a 3.0 is highly prefered)
3) extra-curricular acivities (the stronger the better)
4) standardized test scores (not that important as long as the above is strong)

Have a diversified portfolio that shows you are experienced and competent, or at least have attempted, a wide range of media, from sculpture, ceramics, fibers, printmaking, performance, photography to the common drawing and painting exercises everyone submits. Show that you can do one or two things well, and have sampled others too.

Just made a diverse portfolio with paintings, drawings, etc and took excellent slides of my artwork. Do some abstract worth mixed with realism.
