I was in the lower range of the SAT scores. I worked to get keep a strong class ranking (2 in a large HS) and also was very active in activities, including events outside of normal high school (state and county initiatives). I never visited MIT.

Talk to sports coaches if you plan to play a sport. They can help you get in. Also, I think you should do extracurriculars in areas outside of academics, because with the grades and scored you need to apply, you could do those activities if you had time.
