Be the best at what you enjoy, which meansApr 03 2013Physics
Be the best at what you enjoy, which means quality over quantity. It can be math, music, physics, engineering, robotics etc... It is better too be darn good at 1 thing than average at 10.

Since you are interested at MIT, I won't even comment on the grades/score. If you are to flourish here, those things should come effortlessly.
SAT: 1540 Male

It's safe to say that most students applying toMar 15 2010Biology
It's safe to say that most students applying to MIT have good test scores and GPAs. What the admissions committee really wants to see is who you are as a person. Spend the most amount of time on the essay, and write it yourself! Do not let anyone edit it for you-- proofreading for grammar is fine, but the words should all be your own.
Trust that MIT admissions knows what they're doing.
SAT: 2120 Female
I was relatively good at math (not anymore, though,Jan 14 2010Math
I was relatively good at math (not anymore, though, haha). Got good enough grades and scores, I guess. Did sports, but not that well.
ACT: 34 SAT: 2230 Male
Good gradeApr 26 2006Undecided
Good grades and SAT scores help, of course. The most crucial thing, though, is that little extra. You must go above and beyond your peers, by winning a competition or getting an internship or starting your own company, however you want to do it.
SAT: 1580 Female
Got good HSApr 08 2006Economics
Got good HS grades and SAT. But I had too easy a time in HS and had poor study habits. I almost flunked MIT because of poor grades, but got lots of help from one or two faculty. Finallly graduated, which was the point. You must set up a regular study schedule, become disciplined, and ignore other unessential stuff (partying, etc.)until you know how to handle the academic stuff. The rewards come later when you've gotten your degree. After 50 years I find it still impresses people.
