As someone else posted before- it is easy to get in and tough to stay. Maybe I was reaching to high.

If you really want to attend this school, I can't blame you. Word of mouth tricked me too.

I do, however, suggest that if you're straight out of high school or transferring in from a 2yr college, and you have a scholarship which requires your successful completion of the first semester in order to gain the scholarship: complete your first semester else where. I have watched tons of youngsters come in, only to loose scholarships and/or be disqualified from receiving them, because this school is tricky.

Honestly, after 2 years at this school, I still don't know what all the hype is about.

I had to have a good GPA as aNov 17 2010Engineering Department
I had to have a good GPA as a transfer student, I think a 3.0 and thats what was needed to get in. You also HAVE TO HAVE health insurance or else the school will not take you.

To get in to NMT, you should have high ACT or SAT scores, or have a high GPA to meet the requirements. If you want to go to NMT, as an engineering student, you'll want to get the science and math classes done pronto so make sure you are passed pre Calculus, so you can start working on those science classes like Chemistry and Physics.

Getting into the school is not difficultJun 08 2010Chemistry
Getting into the school is not difficult. A 23 or higher ACT score helps as well as a proficiency in math at the level of Algebra & Trig but knowing Calculus is a strong plus.

Getting in is not too difficult although a good number of students do drop out after their first semester of classes because they do not take the school seriously (about a third). If you are looking for a non-challenging environment, this school is not for you.

The admission standards to NMT are relatively low, butMar 28 2008Physics
The admission standards to NMT are relatively low, but the freshman attrition rate is high. My experience was that many of the people who came in weren't ready for the challenge. That, or they didn't like Socorro. Getting in is easy. Staying in is hard. If you start feeling overwhelmed your freshman year, my advice would be to get help quickly before you fail your classes. Profs and TAs are very willing to help and there's plenty of tutoring for most of the subjects. You don't have to be a genius to succeed at Tech, but you DO have to be a hard worker.
