Essay (14) | PreVet and Veterinary | Oct 14 2011 | It's not easy. The GPA and the scores are necessary, but as you've heard a million times, they are not enough. The acceptance rate keeps dropping, so it's only getting tougher. So write your essay about something particular about Northwestern. Research university programs, or pick a special thing that interests you/excites you - even if you're an undecided major - and write about that. Oh, and interview!! Alum are great, so your alum interview can only help you. It helps you look good to the school and it gives you an opportunity to talk to someone about the school who actually went there. I didn't have the most stellar academic record (9th grade was abysmal, 10th grade was a bit better, 11th grade was good, and 12th was great). I spent a LOT of time on my essay to make sure it was great, especially since I was applying as an English major. I also had a TON of extra curriculars, which I'm sure helped. One thing I did which I think helped was to get recommendations from a wide range of teachers. I got one from an English teacher who had me for years and really liked me and one from a math teacher. (That made a bit more sense because at the time I was thinking of minoring in math.) I guess my best advise would be to have a great and unique essay. It gives you personality and makes you stand out. The same as any other school - good test scores, good grades, extracurriculars, good essays. Political Science
