It was 25 years ago, but strong academic performance including advanced courses alongside some evidence of leadership and contribution to my high school community.
Be an individual and work hard -- albeit not too hard. You have to be a fast worker, not just a good worker. I have discovered that speed is far more valuable.
You have to do activities that everyone else at your high school hasnt done. With thousands of kids applying to the university, they look for that one thing that makes you stand out. Believe me, a high score on the SAT's wont carry you through. You need to have that little something extra. I went to do community service in Fiji, and wrote my college essay on that experience. I believe that is what got me into the colleges I applied to.
