I recommend they follow the process as laid down by the University, and be extremely honest at their audition.

Community service. Be active in highschool. They look at grades and activities more than test scores.

Essays are key. As they are I think for most schools. DON'T slack off on 'em, they can make or break you. That more than anything is my advice for applications.

Also getting a 1540 SAT score helps, but that's sort of a freaky exceptional thing not everyone can (or needs to) replicate...

If in High School, take as many college preparatory classes and indulge yourself in student curriculars, both sports and academic clubs alike. Become a leader and distinguish yourself; work hard to get and maintain good grades, but stay focused on what you want to do in college and ensure that NYU has the program you want. Above all else, if in High School, enjoy it!
