I can't speak to this, since times have changed. I got in in 1983, back when college admission culture was less frenzied, affluent kids had normal childhoods playing hopscotch and catching the now near-extinct firefly in the backyard, and once admitted to Oberlin we walked though 6 feet of snow in bare feet to get to organic chemistry class.

I researched 40 schools, and got in everywhere I applied, including the nation's best liberal arts and Ivy League colleges. I did practice essays with my parents and got critical feedback from them and from my friends who went to Cornell, Dartmouth, and Carleton.
