Frankly, a high SAT score and GPA will be enough; Pomona's selectivity outstrips that of say, instate applications to UC berkeley, but is nowhere near as competitive as admission to most Ivies. I personally know a significant contingent of people at Pomona who were hoping for Yale or Brown but had to settle for Pomona instead. This is not to say that a good experience is impossible; just that many people have, at one point, had other aspirations.
High school GPA was over 4.0 on a weighted scale, captain of multiple varsity sports teams, as well as involvement in a ton of extracurriculars. I interviewed on campus (highly recommended) and was pleased to find that they just wanted to get to know me rather than evaluate me. It's all about whether or not you will "fit" at Pomona - not so much whether you're qualified (as most applicants are very qualified). Make yourself stand out!
