Rice is expanding. Right now is a great time to apply. Also, they're trying to recruit a more diverse population. So internationals and people from the northeast: apply! They're one of the rare top tiered universities that give out a lot of merit aid too.

Pray. Doesn't hurt to do well on the SAT, have good grades, play an orchestral instrument, have written a treatise on the role of native uprisings in the fall of the British Empire, and speak five languages. Either that, or be able to score 30 points a game in basketball or run a 4.3 forty in full pads... Did I mention praying.
