I applied in late August and received an acceptance phone call within the week. I didn't apply anywhere else because I didn't think I'd get in. In hindsight, I should've stayed home and gone to the library every day instead of wasting my loan money on this scam.

If you don't like (preferably love) to read, go somewhere else. If you think you are totally cool--if you aspire to be a Kardashian--go somewhere else. If you want to be part of a small group of thoughtful people (students and faculty)--consider Shimer. If you are interested in learning how to think, not what to think--consider Shimer. If you want an education, not training--consider Shimer. If you have always felt like you were something of an outsider--if high school seemed like a waste of time--definitely consider Shimer.

I came to Shimer College with a 0Sep 06 2012Sociology
I came to Shimer College with a 0.8 GPA from the community college I had attended prior. I left the academic life behind and was a professional stage actor for a while until I found Shimer. I visited Shimer and knew instantly that that is where I wanted to go. I had an interview and got a recommendation from one of my high school teachers, wrote a couple essays to demonstrate where I was at in my writing capabilities; I was accepted. No special "integration" programs to help me adjust or force me to conform to a certain expectation. I was given a chance to show how much I wanted to learn and to be a part of the experience that Shimer College offers.

If you are thinking about going to Shimer, visit the college and stay with one of the Shimerians living in the dorms so you can ask all those little questions that come up. Don't be afraid of asking "stupid questions" and be aggressive about getting the answers you're searching for. People are very friendly and will usually be willing to answer your questions even if they're not a part of your tour guide group. Give Shimer a chance, Shimer will most certainly give you a chance.

The most important part of the application is theSep 06 2012Political Science
The most important part of the application is the written portion. Relax, the prompts both ask questions about your life experiences and aren't all that intimidating. Have fun with it.

If you want in, you're probably inNov 01 2011Philosophy
If you want in, you're probably in. If you're an Early Entrant, ie haven't graduated high school yet, you need decent stats. Otherwise if your stats are low or you can't write, then you're in on probation.
But it's self-selecting. Visit, and you'll know if it's for you. If it is, even if your record sucks, they'll give you a shot. But if you can't hack it, be careful. It's intense.

And, once a year they do a Montaigne competition--if you do well, you can get a full- or half-scholarship. Ask Cassie in Admissions for details.
