Have good grades, good scores, and importantly be passionate about something and have the awards/accomplishments to provide support for this passion. Admissions are obviously somewhat of a crap shoot, but with these qualities an applicant should do well in admissions.

I think you really need to highlight was makes you "special." I was amazed when they told us at orientation the number of perfect SAT scores and 4.0 students they deny each year. Being smart is not enough. Musical talent, published writing, a history of advocacy, athletic skill, and positions of leadership are all things that I saw in people who were admitted (in addition to grades and scores). As with most top colleges I think you need a little luck too.

Work hard in high school, do what inspires you, maintain relationships with teachers, start studying for standardized tests early.
