I had a great interview. I scored 1240 on my SATs. I wrote an essay about being biracial and having an identity crisis.

Showing your interest and understanding of the school's philosophies will definitely help. I recommend interviews, but Skidmore really looks at the big picture- extra curriculars, grades, SAT scores, essays, etc.

To get in I wrote a predictable, done-before essay. It talked about creativity in some way and applying it to life. If you want to get in, do a cliche job of what many other people have done before you. Also offer them money.

Skidmore is not very selective. Also, they are looking for spoiled, horse-riding housewives to be. So, if you fit the bill I'm sure you'll be fine.

Admissions is pretty straightfoward for a school that emphasizes 'creativity'. They'll take you if you have decent grades in a rigorous secondary school program and a high SAT, or high grades in a rigorous program with decent SATs. The vital time to be 'creative' on the application is in your "Why Skidmore" supplement answer.

For students looking at top-caliber LAC's, who have the slightest appreciation of individual talent and art (i.e. theatre/music), Skidmore is an agreeable and reliable safety to apply for admission.

Its not that difficult. Get a decent SAT score. Write a stock essay stating that you are innovative, and that 'creative thought matters' to you. Write about how liberal you are, or that you care about the community (even though you probably do not do anything about your social concerns). Get decent grades. Go to private school. Say that you will not require financial aid.

I had excellent high school grades (my average was in the 90's) from Bronx Science, a specialized high school in NYC. Then I had a 3.5 GPA my first semester at RPI, which eventually dropped to a 1.6 under the stress from being threatened with expulsion for my seizures (which I had no control over!). I left RPI and got a 4.0 GPA at a community college. When it was time to transfer, I was completely honest about what had happened to me and why my grades had suffered and I ended up being waitlisted at Harvard and accepted into Union, Barnard, and Skidmore. I chose Skidmore because of the wonderful environment there and because it had excellent Classics and Theater programs, which I was particularly interested in. I recommend that you get very good grades, take a lot of time writing a truly meaningful essay that makes you stand out, and VISIT THE SCHOOL before you go to make sure it's a good fit for you. I regret not spending more time at RPI talking with the other students. I went on tours, but didn't actually get to talk to the students. If you have visited the school and spent time there, you have more to write about when it comes to WHY you're choosing that particular school to apply to.
