As a high school student, I took math and science classes all four years, which really helped since my degree required a lot of both. I also volunteered when I could and did well on the SAT. I did receive a scholarship my freshman year for academics (at my high school, I was in the 2nd quarter, almost the first, but it was extremely competitive).

On a side note, you also get scholarships each year your GPA is above a 3.5, which really helps out.

In my essays, I wrote about my idols who happened to be 2 professors at TAMUG, and then discussed my affinity for the ocean.

I had a job in high school which restricted my ability to join organizations, but I did compete in academic decathlon. I think they took both into consideration.

My boyfriend at the time also ended up attending TAMUG. He did not submit his application until that summer before, and he was still able to get it. On another side note, he graduated with the maritime administration degree and is making 70K a year. I think that is above average for that degree, but it just gives you some insight on your opportunities.

I got really good grades in high school, so I immediately got in-state tuition. Also, be a good essay writer...they judge hard on those.
