I got good grades, 3.8 unweighted, and a good SAT score, 1350. I recieved a scholarship to Tulane making my tuition a little lower than half price, around $8000 a semester. If you are looking at going to a college in the 20-30 rankings, apply to Tulane and you might realize that you can go to the #40 school and come out with no student loans whatsoever. they are very generous if you are smart, so get good grades and you will here for less than your state public school will charge and recieve a superior education. Tulane is a great place, and i wouldn't spend my college years ANYWHERE else, not even Harvard.

In my opinion hiring an outside of school college counselor is a good idea for anyone wanting to go to a college of their choice.

I wrote a great essay and had very good recommendations from my teachers. My SAT score was a 1940. I didn't do much extracurricular activities in High School or take any AP classes. However, from what I hear, they have raised the standards a bit since I got accepted.

Get good grades and good SATs. This helps improve schools rankings in US news, which is what they care about.

I was not Greek, but I had many friends who were and who thoroughly enjoyed it. Many of the Fraternities and Sorities had steriotypes. I don't know how many were true, but the way it seemed was that they lived up to their reputations. Even though Greek life is very fun for some, you will not feel left out if you choose not to go Greek. I also was involved in a community service group and gymnastics club. There are many different activities to get involved in (some that I didn't ever even knew existed). I was very much into sports at tulane. I liked the basketball games (especially against loyola) and football is what you make of it (so we may not be that good, but it is fun) Baseball is great and we are good(we do have a rather big fan base here) Our Tennis team has been quite decent these past couple of years (plus you get free hotdogs at the games) That is just to mention a few. Besides sports and humane societies and greek life, there are also many academic groups that you can join.

Tulane sends out many "personal applications" which waive both the application fee and the necessity of an essay. They also award many merit scholarships, specifically the Distinguished Scholars award, which is $19,000 per year toward tuition and $3,000 per year toward on-campus housing. The focus of Tulane has shifted since Katrina to being much more community oriented, so I think that community service probably plays a much larger role in getting in nowadays.
