You know that mental state where you don't know if you're awake or dreaming. In this ambiguous mental state write your application essay.

The University of Chicago is a very self-selective school. Make sure you visit the school beforehand, sit through couple sample classes and talk to students to get to know what kind of school you are applying to. To get in, you just need an above average SAT score (1400's is enough to get you in), a solid high school transcript (with some AP's) and an interesting essay. They really focus on the essay so make sure that your essay stands out. Getting in is relatively easy - but remember that getting out is not so.

Don't worry about your test scores (I got in with a 26 on the ACT)--Just write some killer essays and get heavily involved in high school.

Don't hold back on your essays; they like a little bravery. Strong letters of recommendation, and maybe a little prior research experience if you are going into the sciences. Don't worry about grades or test scores too much, they are secondary to your character and dedication to knowledge.

The admissions committee at Chicago operates upon the principle that the students who appear the most original and imaginative (as viewed through their applications) are those most likely to make important contributions to the university community. Chose recommenders who are likely to say that you are a unique and enthusiastic student. And proofread your essays. The head of admissions has pointed to the fact the "good writers are really good proofreaders".

Write an excellent essay. Trust me.

It really isn't that hard to get in. If you are interested in this kind of place at all, you probably already have the qualifications. The University has trouble filling all its undergrad spots, so admissions are a little more relaxed than it appears. The median SATs are a lot lower than what is listed at this site. If you are a hard-core academic, you probably won't have too much trouble getting in. If you aren't, you should have some unique talent or demonstrated some initiative in your life. For example, one student I knew had a business while in high school. Another ran their own magazine. Interviews can help, but they can also hurt. Don't make any assumptions about your interviewer (mine didn't really like Chicago.) Focus most of your effort on the essay, as I believe it is the most important part. I wrote a pretty off-the-wall creative essay, and I think that won me points. Applying early decision also improves your chances.

Good essays. If your application is weak, you will not get in.
English
I applied. The most important thing, I think, is good writing samples.
